Sophie Cunningham on Fever Eliminating Dream in WNBA Playoffs + A’ja Wilson & Las Vegas Aces Preview
With the Indiana Fever advancing past the Atlanta Dream in one of the most talked-about first-round series in recent memory, players across the league are weighing in — including Phoenix Mercury guard and ESPN analyst Sophie Cunningham. Sitting courtside for Game 3, Cunningham praised the Fever’s composure and growth on national television and later expanded on her thoughts during a post-game interview.
“Indiana just kept getting better every single game,” Cunningham said. “You could see Caitlin [Clark] taking control, NaLyssa [Smith] owning the paint, and everyone buying into Steph White’s system. That’s what wins you playoff series.” She added that the Fever’s ability to channel the energy of record-setting crowds “makes them dangerous” even against more experienced teams.
Her comments fed into the natural question: what’s next for Indiana? The answer is a heavyweight matchup with the defending champion Las Vegas Aces, led by two-time MVP A’ja Wilson. The Aces swept their opening round and are rested, healthy and chasing a historic three-peat. Wilson is averaging 24.8 points and 11.2 rebounds per game this postseason while anchoring one of the league’s stingiest defenses.
“The Aces are the measuring stick for everyone,” Cunningham noted. “They’re deep, they’re disciplined and they know how to win when the lights are brightest. But Indiana has nothing to lose. Young teams can be dangerous when they’re playing free.”
Matchups to watch include Wilson’s battle with Smith in the frontcourt and how Las Vegas defends Clark’s high pick-and-roll game. The Fever’s supporting cast — Lexie Hull, Kelsey Mitchell and bench energy from Kristy Wallace — will also be critical against a seasoned Aces rotation featuring Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum.
For the Fever, simply reaching this stage represents a breakthrough after years at the bottom of the standings. For the Aces, it’s about maintaining dynasty status. As Cunningham put it, “This is where you find out who you are. Indiana is ahead of schedule, but Las Vegas is the gold standard.”
The series tips off Sunday night on national television, promising another marquee moment for the league’s new wave of fans.
