“They Laughed at Serena Williams at the Bank—Five Minutes Later, the Teller Was Fired on the Spot”
It was supposed to be a quick stop. Serena Williams—tennis legend, investor, and founder of a multimillion-dollar venture capital firm—walked into First National Bank in downtown Miami wearing a hoodie, sunglasses, and sneakers. She wasn’t there to make headlines. Just business.
She had recently closed a $50 million deal with a tech startup, and she wanted to open a new business account for her latest fund focused on empowering Black women entrepreneurs. Low-profile, straightforward—until it wasn’t.
She walked up to the front desk and politely asked to speak with a business account manager.
The young teller, Jessica Miller, barely glanced up. “Are you here to cash a check?”
“No,” Serena replied calmly. “I’m here to open a corporate account. I’m wiring in $50 million.”
Jessica laughed. “You’re funny.”
Serena didn’t laugh.
Jessica narrowed her eyes. “Do you have an appointment? Because we don’t handle… fantasy claims without one.”
“I do. It’s under Serena Williams,” she said, handing over her ID.
Jessica squinted at it, then scoffed. “This can’t be real. This is fake ID. You expect me to believe the Serena Williams is just walking in here alone in a hoodie?”
“I’m here to do business,” Serena replied, keeping her composure.
“You know what?” Jessica snapped. “Wait right here.” She picked up the phone and, to Serena’s disbelief, called the police.
“We have a woman here attempting to commit fraud. Says she’s Serena Williams—yeah, that Serena Williams.”
Several people in the lobby turned their heads. Some pulled out phones. The moment was shifting fast.
Serena didn’t argue.
She stepped back, pulled out her phone, and made one call.
“Hi, Rob. I’m at First National on 6th. I’m being harassed. Can you send someone down?”
“On it,” came the voice on the other end. Rob Benson—Serena’s longtime attorney and managing partner of a billion-dollar firm. He didn’t wait for backup.
Four minutes later, two black SUVs pulled up outside. A team of corporate attorneys in sharp suits walked through the front doors like they owned the place. One of them held up a badge: legal counsel for First National’s parent company.
At the same time, a sleek silver Bentley pulled up. Out stepped none other than Charles DeWitt, the Chairman of the Board for First National.
He didn’t say hello. He didn’t smile.
“Where is she?” he demanded.
A now-nervous manager pointed toward Serena. She stood calmly near the reception desk.
Charles walked straight to her, hand extended. “Miss Williams, I am deeply sorry. This is unacceptable on every level.”
Serena gave a polite nod.
Charles turned to the teller. “Jessica Miller?”
“Yes?” Jessica squeaked, realizing too late what she’d done.
“You’re terminated. Effective immediately. Clear your desk.”
The bank fell into stunned silence.
Two other employees were quietly escorted out—managers who had failed to intervene.
Charles addressed the room: “Let this serve as a message. We don’t tolerate discrimination, disrespect, or ignorance—especially not toward one of the most accomplished investors and athletes of our time.”
By now, social media had picked up the incident. Someone’s video of the confrontation had already reached hundreds of thousands of views.
Serena quietly completed her business in a private conference room, her $50 million transfer processed without another word of disrespect.
As she left the building, a young Black girl standing outside waved at her. “Miss Williams… they shouldn’t have treated you like that.”
Serena smiled. “Sometimes they need a reminder of who we are.”
