Strait of Hormuz Airspace Under Siege: Russian-Supplied Defenses Reshape the Battle for the Skies
STRAIT OF HORMUZ,— The confrontation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz has entered one of its most dangerous phases yet, with military aircraft, missile batteries, surveillance systems and naval forces crowding a narrow strategic corridor that carries enormous consequences for the global economy.
Iran and the United States are now making competing claims of control over the Strait of Hormuz, while commercial shipping remains sharply reduced amid repeated attacks and threats. Tehran says the waterway is under Iranian management. Washington, meanwhile, insists it can sustain its naval blockade of Iranian ports while protecting non-Iranian vessels attempting to move through the region.

Above the water, however, the situation is even more complicated.
Iran has spent months attempting to rebuild and reorganize an air-defense network battered by American and Israeli strikes. Part of that network includes Russian-origin weapons, while reports have also pointed to broader Russian assistance involving military technology and intelligence.
But one crucial distinction remains: there is currently no independently verified evidence that Russian forces themselves have established an air blockade over the Strait of Hormuz or that Moscow directly controls the airspace.
Instead, Russian-supplied equipment is becoming part of a larger Iranian effort to make the skies surrounding the strategic waterway increasingly dangerous.
And that distinction does little to reduce the tension.
The Strait of Hormuz has effectively become one of the most heavily contested military zones in the world.
Iran began restricting the waterway after the U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran started on February 28. The confrontation has since expanded into repeated exchanges involving missiles, drones, aircraft, naval forces and attacks on commercial shipping. Tehran has repeatedly warned that vessels cannot freely cross the strait without authorization, while Washington rejects Iranian claims of unrestricted control.
The consequences are already visible at sea.
According to shipping data cited by Reuters, only nine commodity vessels crossed Hormuz on Thursday, August 13, compared with an August daily average of roughly 12. Five vessels entered the Gulf and four exited toward the Gulf of Oman. The numbers remain far below normal pre-conflict activity.
The same day, two vessels belonging to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company were attacked while transiting the strait. No injuries were reported, but the UAE blamed Iran for the attacks, reinforcing fears that even commercial ships attempting to navigate the corridor remain vulnerable.
Every missile launch, radar activation or unexplained aircraft movement over the area now carries the possibility of triggering another escalation.
Russian Weapons Add Another Layer of Danger
Russia has long supplied Iran with military hardware, including air-defense technology.
Iran has operated the Russian-built S-300 surface-to-air missile system alongside domestically developed systems such as the Bavar-373. Iranian forces publicly demonstrated both systems working together during military exercises in February 2025.
More recently, reports have suggested that military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow has expanded.
In February 2026, Reuters reported that Iran had agreed to a secret deal worth about €500 million to acquire thousands of advanced shoulder-fired missiles from Russia, citing reporting by the Financial Times.
Western security officials have also alleged that Russia has provided satellite imagery that could help Iran monitor or identify military targets across the Middle East. Reuters reported in March that European governments were raising concerns about possible Russian assistance to Iran, including satellite imagery and help improving drone capabilities. Moscow denied allegations concerning intelligence support while acknowledging broader military cooperation with Tehran.
That does not mean Russian troops are operating Iranian air-defense batteries around Hormuz.
But it does mean American and allied pilots have to account for technology, intelligence and weapons linked to one of the world’s most experienced air-defense suppliers.
For aircraft operating over a narrow combat zone, that matters enormously.

The Sky Is Far From Secure
Iran has repeatedly claimed that its air defenses are becoming more effective.
In April, Iranian authorities said a newly deployed air-defense system had been used against a U.S. fighter jet and declared that Tehran intended to restore control over Iranian airspace.
Washington has responded with sustained attacks against Iran’s military infrastructure.
On July 9, U.S. Central Command said American forces had struck approximately 90 Iranian military targets, including air-defense systems, coastal surveillance facilities and missile and drone storage sites. Days later, reports emerged of additional U.S. strikes against Iranian missile and air-defense positions around the Strait of Hormuz.
That alone makes the idea that either side has achieved uncontested dominance difficult to sustain.
Iran is trying to rebuild defensive coverage.
The United States is trying to destroy it.
Russian-origin equipment and reported Russian assistance are helping complicate the battlefield.
Meanwhile, American aircraft continue operating throughout the region.
The result is not a clean blockade of the skies.
It is a constantly shifting air war in which radar operators, fighter pilots and missile crews may have only minutes — sometimes seconds — to determine whether an approaching object is hostile.
Hormuz Becomes the Center of a Global Crisis
The military struggle is taking place over one of the most economically sensitive locations on Earth.
Before the current conflict, roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments moved through the Strait of Hormuz, making disruption there capable of affecting energy prices far beyond the Gulf.
The prolonged confrontation has already contributed to severe pressure on energy markets. Brent crude reached $88.67 per barrel on August 11 as traders reacted to supply disruptions and continued uncertainty surrounding Hormuz.
Diplomats are attempting to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
Iran and Oman have been negotiating arrangements governing shipping through the strait, and officials recently indicated that progress had been made. Tehran, however, has insisted that reopening Hormuz depends on broader conditions involving Washington, including sanctions and other political demands.
At the same time, the Pentagon says it can continue the naval blockade of Iranian ports indefinitely by rotating American warships through the region.
That leaves the Strait of Hormuz trapped between military pressure and incomplete diplomacy.
And the skies above it may be the most unpredictable part of the confrontation.
Iranian missile batteries are being rebuilt. Russian-origin systems remain part of Tehran’s defensive arsenal. New weapons are being sought from abroad. American aircraft continue operating throughout the theater, while U.S. forces repeatedly strike Iranian radar, missile and air-defense infrastructure.
The strategic picture is therefore more alarming — and more complicated — than the claim that Russia has simply seized control of the skies.
Russia has not been shown to be directly blockading Hormuz airspace.
But Russian military technology and reported assistance are contributing to an increasingly lethal Iranian defensive network, while Tehran and Washington battle for control of the waterway below.
For commercial shipping, military planners and global energy markets, that distinction may offer little comfort.
The Strait of Hormuz has become a pressure point where a single missile launch, intercepted aircraft or mistaken radar identification could transform an already dangerous confrontation into something dramatically larger.
