When we first saw her, Gracie barked loudly, as if desperately calling for help. As we turned to leave, she ran after us, afraid we might abandon her too. But the heavy chain around her neck held her back. She raised her paw, silently pleading, “Take me with you.”

Gracie’s owner had neglected her for days, leaving her hungry and alone. Unable to have more puppies, she was no longer wanted—a shocking and cruel reason for abandonment. For days, her cries echoed through the neighborhood, growing weaker from hunger until neighbors finally took notice.

When we arrived, her owner didn’t make things difficult. He simply said, “Take her as far away as possible.” It was the saddest afternoon of Gracie’s life. She had been rejected by the person she loved and trusted most. On the drive away, she sat silently, expressionless, staring out at the long road ahead, uncertain of what awaited her. Would things ever get better?

We arranged a temporary shelter for Gracie, where she found a warm bed and plenty of food. Yet, she cried—perhaps out of emotion or longing for the home she once knew. The rough collar she’d worn for years had left her skin red and inflamed, and patches of her body had grown tough and calloused. Her short tail showed no sign of joy.

For an old dog like Gracie, forgetting her past would take time. Despite everything, she remained loyal. I held her paw and promised, “Trust me, I’m here to help.” That night, she barely slept, lying still and quiet. But the next morning, she bravely began to explore her new surroundings, relishing her freedom without chains. We removed the old collar—she was ready for a new, better chapter.

We contacted several veterinarians for checkups. Gracie needed rest and urgent healing after years of neglect. It was heartbreaking to realize that all her owner cared about was her ability to produce puppies.

At the shelter, the other dogs were surprised by her timid nature. Gracie was even shyer than she looked—likely a result of a lifetime spent chained and alone, never having played with other dogs. She was fearful, preferring the safety of a closed door between herself and others. She watched us from a distance, uncertain about entering the house. But soon, we hoped, she would feel at home.

Two days later, we took her to the vet for a thorough examination—a day I will never forget. Gracie remained silent during the journey, observing everything with quiet curiosity. At the clinic, she was anxious, looking to me for reassurance. The doctors spent a long time examining her and took samples for testing. It was likely her first-ever visit to a veterinarian.

After a while, the vet told us Gracie needed to be admitted for further tests. I was terrified—something felt wrong. The doctors suspected cancer and sent a sample for biopsy. Gracie also suffered from severe dermatitis. We were sent home to await the results.

The vet estimated Gracie to be around 12 years old. After 12 years of life spent in chains, everything now seemed new to her. Two days later, we returned to the clinic and received devastating news: Gracie had cancer—a malignant tumor near her heart and another in her mammary gland. She underwent her first round of chemotherapy. All we could do was pray for her recovery.

Gracie now receives medical baths twice daily, which have helped soothe her itchy skin. She has a healthy appetite and is eating well. We scheduled a cardiology appointment for an ultrasound and further advice. Her next round of chemotherapy will be in 15-20 days. We never imagined she was suffering from such a serious illness—years of neglect had taken their toll.

After each chemotherapy session, Gracie comes home exhausted and with little appetite, yet she never once complains. She is doing her best to fight through this. Thankfully, she is responding well to her medication and her health has improved significantly. A recent heart exam showed nothing to worry about, though we must keep her stress-free.

Surgery was ruled out due to the high risk, but with regular medication, she can continue her new life. Gracie has adapted remarkably well, showing no side effects from treatment. We are ready to return home and embrace our new life together.
