Stolen Name, Stolen Benefits: New Details on Alleged Cult, FBI Raid on Mansion

Martinez, Georgia — A sweeping federal investigation has revealed new details about an alleged cult operating under the guise of a religious organization, following a dramatic FBI raid on a nearly $2 million mansion in Columbia County. Authorities say the leader of the House of Prayer Christian Churches of America built his empire using a stolen identity, millions in defrauded veteran benefits, and an intricate web of deception spanning nearly two decades.

On September 10, FBI agents, alongside local law enforcement, raided a sprawling 11,000-square-foot mansion at 3816 Honors Way in the upscale West Lake community. The property, linked to the alleged cult leader who identified himself as “Rony Denis,” became the epicenter of a federal investigation involving identity theft, benefits fraud, tax evasion, and abuse of power.

Federal prosecutors allege that “Rony Denis” is not the man’s real name. According to court documents, the suspect stole the identity of a Haitian man in 1983 and used it to obtain U.S. citizenship in 2002—the same year he founded the House of Prayer organization. The church, operating in multiple states, presented itself as a seminary serving military veterans and active-duty service members. However, prosecutors claim the institution was a front to exploit the GI Bill and other federal programs.

Through this scheme, the church reportedly received over $23 million in veterans’ education benefits, with more than $3 million going to Georgia locations alone. Investigators say veterans were encouraged to enroll in the church’s seminary, where they received little or no instruction, while tuition payments flowed into church-controlled accounts.

The alleged scam didn’t stop at educational fraud. According to the indictment, Denis and seven other church leaders—identified as Anthony Oloans, Joseph Fryar, Dennis Nostrant, Gerard Robertson, David Reip, Marcus Labat, and Omar Garcia—were also involved in real estate fraud and false tax filings. They allegedly used straw buyers and fake documents to acquire properties, generating over $5 million in rental income between 2018 and 2020.

In addition to financial crimes, former church members described the group as cult-like, alleging psychological control, forced marriages, and isolation from family members. Dissenters were reportedly labeled as traitors and faced severe treatment, including threats and spiritual manipulation.

The mansion at the center of the raid is listed at $1.96 million and features seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and multiple luxury amenities. Records show it was owned by a partnership known as Union GL Park, which prosecutors say is directly tied to the accused leader.

As of now, the alleged ringleader is being held in the Jefferson County jail awaiting transfer. The investigation is ongoing, and federal authorities have not ruled out additional charges or arrests.

This case underscores the challenges in regulating religious institutions that receive federal funds, particularly when vulnerable populations like veterans are involved. It also raises serious questions about oversight and accountability in the intersection of faith, finance, and federal programs.
