Russia’s S-400 Fired 6 Missiles — The Next Night, Ukrainian Drones BURNED It
A Russian S-400 air-defense position on the Black Sea coast went from hunter to hunted in a matter of hours. According to Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, the battery positioned near Gelendzhik in Russia’s Krasnodar region launched six missiles on August 8. By the following night, Ukrainian drones were descending on the same position. Flames reportedly engulfed the site, with the military installation burning and smoldering for roughly three hours. The dramatic strike highlighted a rapidly changing battlefield reality: even some of Russia’s most heavily protected air-defense assets are increasingly being targeted by inexpensive, long-range unmanned aircraft.
Six Launches — Then the Drones Came
The timeline presented by Ukrainian commanders is striking.
Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces and widely known by his call sign “Madyar,” said the S-400 position near Gelendzhik conducted six missile launches between approximately 9:25 a.m. and 12:51 p.m. on August 8. Ukrainian forces then targeted the position during the night of August 8–9. Brovdi said the site remained on fire for around three hours after the drone attack.
The significance was not simply that another Russian military position had been struck. The S-400 is intended to form part of Russia’s sophisticated layered air-defense network, designed to detect and engage aircraft, missiles and drones before they reach critical targets.
Yet the Gelendzhik episode appeared to reverse those roles.
A system intended to destroy incoming aerial threats became the target of the very type of weapon it was supposed to stop.
Ukraine’s account has not been independently established in every operational detail, so claims regarding the precise extent of destruction should be treated cautiously. What Ukrainian sources did report clearly, however, was that the S-400 position was hit and burned for an extended period after the attack.

Why Gelendzhik Matters
Gelendzhik sits on Russia’s Black Sea coast in Krasnodar Krai, an increasingly important theater in Ukraine’s long-range campaign.
The region contains military infrastructure, ports, radar stations and air-defense positions protecting southern Russia and Black Sea facilities. Ukraine has increasingly attempted to penetrate those defensive layers with drones, forcing Moscow to devote resources to protecting sites well behind the conventional front line.
The attack on the S-400 was also not isolated.
According to Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, operations during the same night targeted additional Russian air-defense equipment, including a Tor system in Rostov Oblast, a Pantsir-S1 near Yeysk in Krasnodar Krai, and Podlyot-K1 and Kasta 2E2 radar systems in Rostov Oblast.
That combination is important.
Destroying or damaging a single launcher can hurt a specific defensive position. Striking launchers, short-range air-defense systems and radar stations together can potentially create gaps across a larger defensive network.
That appears to be one of Ukraine’s broader objectives: not merely attacking Russian targets, but systematically degrading the sensors and interceptors protecting them. The Kyiv Independent noted that repeated attacks on Russian air defenses can reduce Moscow’s ability to control local airspace, potentially opening routes for later strikes against logistics and military infrastructure.
A Dangerous Role Reversal for the S-400
The incident carries another unusual dimension.
Although the S-400 was developed primarily as an air-defense weapon, Russian forces have also used S-400-family missiles in attacks against ground targets in Ukraine. The Kyiv Independent reported that the Gelendzhik system had been involved in such launches before Ukrainian drones struck its position.
That means Ukraine was not simply attacking a defensive battery.
From Kyiv’s perspective, it was targeting a system that had allegedly been used offensively against Ukrainian territory only hours earlier.
The sequence creates an almost cinematic battlefield narrative: six missiles leave the Russian coastline during daylight; Ukrainian reconnaissance identifies the firing position; darkness falls; drones move toward the coast; explosions follow; and the launcher that had been firing earlier is surrounded by flames.
Yet behind that dramatic sequence lies a serious tactical contest involving surveillance, electronic warfare, air-defense ammunition, radar coverage and increasingly sophisticated unmanned systems.
Ukraine Is Trying to Tear Open Russia’s Black Sea Shield
Ukraine’s growing emphasis on drones has become especially visible around the Black Sea.
On August 12, just days after the reported Gelendzhik strike, Ukrainian missiles and drones attacked Russia’s major naval hub at Novorossiysk. Russian regional authorities said hundreds of Ukrainian drones targeted Novorossiysk, Anapa, Gelendzhik and the Temryuk district. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the operation struck air defenses, piers and other infrastructure connected with the naval base.
Russia said its air defenses destroyed more than 500 Ukrainian drones during that wider operation, while Russian regional authorities reported civilian casualties and damage to residential and industrial sites. AP reported that three people, including an eight-year-old child, were killed in Krasnodar region and 24 others were wounded.
Those figures demonstrate the enormous scale of the drone war now unfolding over southern Russia and Ukraine.
This is no longer a battlefield defined only by tanks, trenches and artillery.
Increasingly, the contest is about finding a radar before it detects you, identifying a launcher after it fires, overwhelming defensive networks with numerous unmanned aircraft and striking expensive military equipment with weapons that may be far cheaper than the systems defending against them.
The Cost of Losing Air Defense
For Russia, the danger extends beyond the physical loss of an individual launcher.
Every damaged radar or air-defense position can force commanders to reposition equipment, increase protection around strategic installations or redistribute systems from other sectors.
That creates a persistent dilemma.
Concentrate sophisticated defenses around the Black Sea, and another region could become more vulnerable. Spread those systems across thousands of kilometers of Russian-controlled territory, and individual positions may become easier to isolate and attack.
Ukraine appears determined to exploit that problem.
Brovdi said his forces were simultaneously targeting multiple categories of Russian equipment during the August 8–9 operations, while Ukrainian forces have repeatedly emphasized deep strikes against air-defense and logistical infrastructure.
The strategy is straightforward in principle: attack the shield before attacking what sits behind it.
Executing that strategy against a country with one of the world’s largest air-defense networks is considerably harder.
From Defender to Target
The Gelendzhik strike therefore matters beyond the image of a burning missile position.
If Ukraine’s account is accurate, Russian troops fired six missiles from the S-400 position during August 8. Hours later, Ukrainian unmanned aircraft found the site and struck it. The position then burned for approximately three hours.
It is a small episode compared with the enormous scale of the war, but it captures a much larger transformation taking place above the battlefield.
Weapons once regarded as relatively safe behind powerful defensive networks are increasingly being hunted.
Radar stations are being tracked.
Launchers are being located after firing.
Ports hundreds of kilometers from the front are coming under attack.
And drones are forcing military planners on both sides to reconsider what “behind the lines” even means.
For Russia, the six missile launches near Gelendzhik demonstrated the continued reach of its missile forces.
For Ukraine, what happened the following night carried a different message.
The launcher might be able to fire.
But once it revealed where it was, the drones were already coming.
