Sophie Cunningham VOWS REVENGE After Dirty Injury – “I WILL TAKE MY REVENGE!”
The WNBA has just been hit with a storm of controversy, as Phoenix Mercury star Sophie Cunningham made a fiery public statement following what she claims was a “dirty and intentional” injury during a heated game earlier this week. And now? She’s promising one thing: revenge.
The incident occurred late in the third quarter of the Mercury’s recent matchup against the Las Vegas Aces. Cunningham was driving hard to the rim when she collided mid-air with a defender — and hit the floor hard. She clutched her shoulder in visible pain and had to be helped off the court, unable to return for the remainder of the game.
At first, fans believed it was just another tough play in a physical game. But Cunningham sees it very differently.
In a post-game press appearance, Sophie didn’t hold back.
“That wasn’t hustle. That wasn’t a hard foul. That was dirty,” she said through gritted teeth. “She knew exactly what she was doing — and I’ll say this clearly: I will take my revenge.”
The chilling quote spread across social media like wildfire.
Cunningham didn’t name names, but fans and analysts immediately speculated she was referring to Aces guard Jackie Young, who was guarding her closely on the play. While replays showed a physical collision, there’s debate as to whether the contact was excessive — or intentional.
The WNBA has not issued a ruling yet, but league officials confirmed the play is under review for possible disciplinary action. For now, Young and the Aces have remained silent, choosing not to escalate the situation.
But Sophie’s words have sparked a massive debate in the basketball world.
Some fans are rallying behind her, praising her for standing up and speaking out. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) wrote:
“Say what you want about Sophie Cunningham, but she’s a fighter. If someone took her out on purpose, they better be ready.”
Others, however, are criticizing her response, accusing her of inciting further conflict.
“Threatening revenge in public? That’s not leadership — that’s reckless,” one user posted.
Former WNBA player and ESPN analyst Swin Cash chimed in, urging the league to step in:
“The WNBA is built on toughness and respect. This situation needs de-escalation — not open threats of retaliation.”
As of now, Cunningham’s condition remains day-to-day. Team doctors say she avoided major structural damage but may miss at least one or two games to heal.
Still, Sophie made it clear: she’s not done.
“I’ll be back,” she told reporters. “And when I am, I won’t forget what happened.”
With tensions running high and both teams set to face off again in just three weeks, the next matchup is now one of the most highly anticipated of the season. And with Cunningham vowing revenge, all eyes will be on the court — and what happens next.
Brace yourselves. This rivalry just got personal.
