In the vast expanse of pop culture history, few moments shine as brightly and as tenderly as Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World” segment during his concerts. This iconic performance was not just a display of musical brilliance; it was a heartfelt message from a global superstar to the world—an appeal for unity, love, and compassion that transcended borders, languages, and cultures. Behind this powerful moment lies a fascinating story of inspiration, creativity, and homage—a tale that weaves Michael Jackson’s artistry with timeless inspirations from Disney productions and an ongoing commitment to spreading hope.
Michael Jackson, often hailed as the King of Pop, was a visionary artist whose impact went beyond music charts and record sales. He possessed a unique ability to blend entertainment with deep social consciousness, offering performances that were as visually spectacular as they were emotionally profound. Among his many contributions to art and culture, his “Heal the World” segment stands out as a poignant expression of his dream for a better, more compassionate planet.
The roots of this segment hark back to long before Michael Jackson graced the stages wearing the famous glove or sported his iconic fedora. The imagery and concept were, in part, inspired by the enchanting world created by Disney, which has long been synonymous with magical storytelling and the celebration of global cultures. Particularly influential was Disney’s 1991 rendition of its beloved attraction, “It’s a Small World.”

The “It’s a Small World” segment by Disney was a breathtaking celebration of the world’s children, dressed in national costumes from every corner of the globe, parading joyously to a melody that encapsulated innocence and hope. This display of cultural diversity, unity, and shared humanity, unfolding at the center of the theme park’s pitch, was a visual and emotional feast that enchanted millions. Children represented the future, dressed in vibrant attires symbolizing various nations, their laughter and songs weaving a tapestry of peace and connectedness.
Michael Jackson, always observant and deeply moved by such expressions of unity, saw in this idea a profound visual metaphor fit for his message. It was this global display of children—innocent, diverse, and harmoniously united—that inspired him to craft the “Heal the World” segment within his Dangerous concert tour. Much like Disney’s depiction, Michael’s performance showcased children similarly dressed in national costumes, standing together as one, embodying the universal hope for healing and unity.
As the music began, a hush would fall over concert arenas filled with tens of thousands of fans from all over the world. The stage transformed into a radiant beacon of light. Children from different continents, cultures, and traditions united in song, their colorful costumes painting a vibrant mosaic against the darkness of the backdrop. The melody, filled with poignant lyrics and melodic tenderness, echoed a timeless plea: to heal the world, to make it a better place for all children and for generations to come.
But Michael Jackson’s dedication to artistry extended far beyond symbolic visuals. The entirety of the “Heal the World” segment, including its choreography and musical arrangement, was interwoven with elements directly lifted from his Dangerous concert tour the year prior. The choreography was masterful—each movement choreographed to perfection, encapsulating themes of nurturing, protection, and hope. The iconic moves, fluid yet commanding, demonstrated Michael’s signature blend of grace and energy. The entire performance was a grand synthesis, marrying visual storytelling with captivating musicality and dance.
It was not merely about entertainment; the message was clear and deeply stirring. Through this segment, Michael Jackson reached out to every person watching and listening, across cultures and countries, imploring them to recognize their shared humanity and to embrace peace and kindness. Children—a symbol of innocence and possibility—stood as living emblems of this plea. The national costumes underscored the beauty of diversity, while their unified chorus illustrated the power of global harmony.
The “Heal the World” segment was more than just a concert performance; it was a cultural touchstone. It connected deeply with audiences, crossing generational and cultural divides. Crowds were moved to tears. Children watching at home saw themselves reflected on stage as part of something larger—a collective dream for love and healing. Fans and critics alike praised the segment for its sincerity, artistic brilliance, and its impassioned humanitarian message.
The legacy of Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World” segment endures far beyond the concert halls and arenas where it was performed. It is a testament to the power of art as a force for good—a reminder that music and performance wield the ability to inspire positive change, foster understanding, and unite humanity in a shared pursuit of hope and peace.
Even today, decades after the Dangerous tour, echoes of this performance can be felt. Its influence resonates in global charity concerts, in the use of multicultural displays in media, and in countless artists who draw from Michael’s example to use their platforms for social good. It stands as a reminder that inspiration flows through the shared experiences of art, culture, and love—and that the dream of healing the world remains a timeless call to action.
In reflecting on this moment, we see not only the creative genius of Michael Jackson but also the legacy of kindness, unity, and global responsibility he sought to impart. Through his homage to Disney’s “It’s a Small World” and his own artistry, Michael Jackson crafted a performance that is remembered not just for its spectacle but for the boundless hope it represented—a hope that, indeed, we can all come together as one to heal and cherish the world we share.
Thus, in the hearts of millions, the image remains vivid: children from every nation, hand in hand, singing a song of peace, while Michael Jackson leads them with a voice full of conviction and love—a symbol that, despite our differences, we are united in our humanity and our dreams for a brighter tomorrow.
The love story of Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley’s daughter
In her recently published memoir, singer Lisa Marie Presley, the only daughter of famous singer Elvis Presley, tells about her marriage to pop star Michael Jackson and the secrets of her bedroom.
Lisa Marie Presley wrote in her memoir that Michael Jackson had never had sex with anyone before they started dating in 1994. “He told me he was a virgin,” Lisa said in her book From Here to the Great Unknown . “I think he kissed Tatum O’Neal and had something with Brooke Shields, but nothing physical. He also said Madonna had made out once, but nothing happened.”
Lisa revealed that the Thriller singer initiated a kiss and made love to her. At that time, Lisa was 26 years old and Michael Jackson was 35 years old, according to Page Six.
The Rock & Roll legend’s daughter first met Michael Jackson at his Las Vegas show when they were both very young. They met again in the early 1990s. During a trip to Las Vegas, Michael confessed his love to Lisa. “Michael said, ‘I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I love you very much. I want us to get married and have children together,’” Lisa said, adding that she was speechless when Michael Jackson suddenly expressed his feelings. But she knew she loved Michael Jackson from that moment.
Upon returning home, Lisa split from her husband, actor Danny Keough, and moved in with the pop singer. The couple married on May 26, 1994, in the Dominican Republic, less than three weeks after Lisa finalized her divorce from Danny, with whom she had two children during their six-year marriage.
Looking back on her honeymoon at Disney World in Florida, Lisa said she had “never felt happier”. “There was this special energy about him that I had never felt in my entire life, except with my dad. I loved him because he was so down to earth.”
In her memoir, Lisa also mentioned that Michael Jackson faced child molestation charges. The singer went to trial but was acquitted in 2005. “I’ve never seen anything like it. If I had, I would have killed him,” she wrote.
Their marriage lasted two years. After their separation, Michael Jackson married nurse Debbie Rowe, with whom he had two children, Paris Jackson and Prince Jackson. The King of Pop also had a third child, Blaket Jackson, via surrogate. Meanwhile, Lisa was married for the third time to actor Nicolas Cage from 2002 to 2004 and was last married to guitarist Michael Lockwood from 2006 to 2021.
Michael Jackson died of cardiac arrest in 2009 at the age of 50. Lisa Marie Presley died in January 2023 at the age of 54 from a bowel obstruction – a complication after a surgery a few years earlier – and the pain of her son Benjamin Keough’s suicide in 2020 .
After Lisa’s death, her daughter, actress Riley Keough, listened to her mother’s tapes and completed the memoir as she wished. Riley said her mother always wanted to write a memoir to share with people her life experiences: love, pain, loss, her battle with addiction and family life. “She wanted to write a book in the hope that someone would read her story and know that they were not alone in this world. Her desire was just to connect with people,” Riley Keough shared in People magazine in early October.
