Senator Josh Hawley Takes Aim at Schumer and Jeffries: “End the Shutdown—Americans Are Suffering!”
As the government shutdown stretches into its 29th day, frustration and anxiety are mounting across the United States. While politicians in Washington bicker over blame, millions of Americans are feeling the real-world impact: missed paychecks, food insecurity, and a sense that their leaders are more interested in scoring political points than solving urgent problems. Enter Senator Josh Hawley, who has emerged as one of the loudest voices demanding action and accountability from Democratic leadership, especially Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Hawley’s No-Nonsense Message: “This Is Not a Game!”
Senator Hawley didn’t mince words in a recent press appearance, blasting the ongoing shutdown as “ridiculous” and “insane.” He was quick to point out that while lawmakers treat the crisis like a horse race—who’s ahead, who’s behind—real people are facing devastating consequences.
“People in this building, this is sort of a game. You know, it’s like, oh, who’s ahead? Who’s behind? As if it’s a horse race. It’s not a horse race. 42 million people are about to go without food, including a lot of children. In my state, it’s 650,000 people. That’s extraordinary. It’s 12% of the American population. And that’s before we even get to people like the military and air traffic controllers who are now no longer getting paid. All of these people should be paid. This is ridiculous.”
Hawley’s passionate remarks resonated with Americans who are fed up with the political gamesmanship in Washington. Every day the shutdown drags on, more families are forced to make impossible decisions about food, rent, and basic necessities.

SNAP Benefits and Real-World Consequences
One of the most immediate threats posed by the shutdown is the looming expiration of SNAP (food stamp) benefits. Hawley emphasized the dire situation facing families, especially children, if Congress fails to act.
“My view is if the Democrats won’t consent to reopen the government, let’s at least ensure that kids aren’t going hungry. This is just ridiculous.”
When asked whether the White House could tap into contingency funds to pay for SNAP benefits, Hawley dismissed the idea as a distraction. He pointed out that even if President Trump wanted to help, he might lack the legal authority—and regardless, only Congress can appropriate the necessary funds.
“This is Congress’s fault, not his fault. The only solution here is we need to appropriate the money. If we don’t do it, 650,000 people in Missouri are going to miss food assistance. 42 million people nationwide. That’s way too many.”

Beyond Partisanship: “No Child Should Go Hungry”
Hawley was adamant that food insecurity isn’t a partisan issue. Whether Republican or Democrat, no American should suffer because politicians refuse to compromise.
“I don’t care who they voted for. No child in this country ought to go to bed hungry because a bunch of politicians in Washington can’t decide what they want to do and are intent on blaming each other. The American people are tired of that. Just open the government.”
He called for an immediate end to the shutdown, but also urged his colleagues to prioritize the most vulnerable if negotiations stall: “If they’re not going to do that, then by all means, let’s make sure that kids are not going hungry. 42 million people are not going to be able to eat.”
Why Are Politicians Still Getting Paid?
Hawley didn’t stop at SNAP benefits. He raised a critical question: why are politicians still collecting paychecks while military personnel, air traffic controllers, and other government workers go without?
“All you have to do is ensure that no politician earns a dime while the government is shut down. Just do that and all these people will be running to get the government back open again. Because why is it that the military, the people who are still doing their jobs day in and day out, they are the ones who have to suffer without a paycheck? Yet the politicians who are in charge of everything and the reason and the root cause for the shutdown, they can just be at home earning money and they have no incentive to get the government back open. That needs to change.”

Democrats Accused of Holding America Hostage
Hawley placed much of the blame for the shutdown squarely on the shoulders of Democratic leaders, accusing them of refusing to compromise and holding the American people hostage to their demands.
“What the Democrats are doing is basically holding the American people hostage and saying you need to go along with our demands. And if you do not, then this shutdown will just extend for as long as we want. That’s wrong. You can’t be doing that to the American people. We deserve better representation in Congress.”
He argued that Schumer’s actions were motivated by internal party politics and a desire to appear tough against President Trump, rather than a genuine concern for the American people.
The Media and Public Perception
Hawley also took aim at the media, suggesting that biased coverage was misleading the public about who’s responsible for the shutdown.
“If the media actually cared about the American citizens and reported on this accurately, I don’t think there would be a single American who would be in favor of what the Democrats are doing right now.”
He warned that the Democrats’ strategy could lead to civil unrest, especially as food assistance and government paychecks are withheld.

A Call to Action: Remember This Come Election Day
As the shutdown drags on, Hawley urged Americans not to forget the crisis when they head to the polls next November.
“I really hope that Americans remember this when they enter the voting booth next November for the midterm elections because I guess the Republicans have to win 60 senators or we’re going to be doomed to repeat this.”
Conclusion: Americans Deserve Better
Senator Josh Hawley’s fiery critique of Washington gridlock has struck a chord with millions of Americans. As families struggle to put food on the table and government workers face mounting bills, Hawley’s message is clear: enough is enough. The time for political games is over. It’s time for Congress—Republicans and Democrats alike—to put aside their differences and reopen the government. Until then, Hawley vows to keep fighting for the people who sent him to Washington.
