The Poolside Adventure

Part 1: Saturday Surprises

The sun peeked through the curtains, painting golden stripes across my bedroom floor. I was just beginning to appreciate the quiet of Saturday morning when the door burst open, and Riley, my sixteen-year-old daughter, bounded in with the energy of a tornado.

“Dad! Wake up!” she called, her voice bubbling with excitement. “You promised we’d do something fun today, and I have the best idea ever!”

Before I could groan or protest, Riley had already yanked off my blanket. Her best friend Naomi, who had spent the night after a marathon of movies and popcorn, appeared behind her, equally enthusiastic.

“What’s going on?” I mumbled, rubbing my eyes.

“Poolside challenge!” Riley declared. “But you can’t know the rules yet. Just get up and trust us!”

I knew better than to argue with Riley when she was in one of her adventurous moods. She and Naomi were a force of nature, and resisting them would only make them more determined. So, I dragged myself out of bed, still half-asleep, and let them lead me out of the house.

As we made our way to the backyard, Riley kept stopping to pick up random objects—pool noodles, beach balls, towels, and even a giant inflatable flamingo. Naomi handed me a pair of oversized sunglasses and a floppy sunhat.

“You’ll need all of these,” Riley said, piling the items into my arms. “It’s part of the challenge!”

I was already suspicious, but their laughter was contagious. Naomi patted my back encouragingly, and Riley looped her arm through mine as we walked outside. The morning air was fresh, and the pool shimmered under the sunlight.

“Okay, Dad,” Riley said, her tone suddenly serious. “Here are the rules: You have to carry both of us to the pool without dropping anything. If you make it, you win. If you drop something—or one of us falls—you have to do a silly dance in front of the neighbors.”

I laughed. “That’s not fair! You two are heavy!”

Naomi grinned. “We believe in you, Mr. Johnson.”

Riley handed me a foam noodle. “This is your baton. Don’t let go!”

They both climbed onto my back, giggling uncontrollably. Naomi’s legs hooked around my waist, and Riley clung to my shoulders. I tried to balance the pile of pool gear, the foam noodle, and the two giggling girls.

“Ready, set, go!” Riley shouted.

I staggered forward, my knees wobbling. Every few steps, Riley would shout encouragement, and Naomi would squeal as I nearly lost my balance. The challenge was harder than I expected, but the laughter and joy on their faces made it worth every awkward step.

We reached the pool’s edge, and with a final burst of energy, I leaped forward, sending us all tumbling into the water. The splash was enormous, and for a moment, I thought the neighbors might actually come out to see what was happening.

We surfaced, sputtering and laughing. Riley climbed out and tried to balance herself on the slippery poolside, while Naomi splashed water at me.

“That was amazing!” Riley cheered. “You did it, Dad!”

I grinned, feeling a rare sense of accomplishment. “Does this mean I don’t have to do the silly dance?”

Naomi winked. “We’ll see about that.”
