The Sovereign Citizen Playbook Fails
Courtrooms across the country are increasingly dealing with the frustrating tactics of “sovereign citizens”—individuals who believe they are exempt from the law and use convoluted, pseudo-legal language to confuse the justice system. But when defendant Janetta Pew tried to unleash these tactics during her hearing, the presiding judge was having none of it.
From the very beginning, Pew attempted to control the narrative. She interrupted the judge, spouted sovereign buzzwords by claiming to be the “beneficiary of an estate,” and demanded to see a “verified claim” against her trust.
The judge immediately established dominance, cutting through the nonsense with a stern warning:
“Just because you say ‘respectfully’ does not mean that you get to interrupt me. That’s disrespectful. Everything you have there is overruled.”
The “Foreign Agent” Excuse
A common sovereign citizen tactic is to reject public defenders by claiming they are agents of the state. Pew followed this script perfectly, refusing the services of her court-appointed attorney, Mr. Lewis, and later his replacement, Mr. Jeff.
Pew argued she could not comply with “appointed foreign agents” because their “first duty is to the state,” claiming it was a massive conflict of interest. She then boldly demanded to be released due to a “defective defense.“
The judge coolly dismissed her demands, explaining the cold, hard reality of the criminal justice system: the indictment is the verified claim, and Pew only had three options. She could hire her own lawyer, accept the appointed attorney, or represent herself.
When Pew declared she would be representing herself, she walked right into a legal trap of her own making.
The Self-Representation Trap
In the legal world, a defendant has the right to represent themselves, but a judge must first ensure they are competent to do so by asking a series of mandatory questions.
The judge warned Pew that self-representation is highly inadvisable. Without years of legal training, a defendant is still expected to know and follow all rules of evidence and procedure—a near-impossible task that usually ends in disaster in front of a jury. Still, the judge began the questioning.
Things quickly fell apart for the defendant when the judge asked if she understood the range of punishment for her charges—a potential two to ten years in prison.

When Pew tried to object one last time, the judge cut her off completely: “I don’t care what you want at this point. You can’t do it.”
With a swift order to “go back with the bailiff,” the smug defendant was escorted out of the courtroom, completely speechless. Her attempt to outsmart the system using internet-lawyer loopholes resulted in a total defeat, proving once again that sovereign citizen tactics simply do not work in a real court of law.
