‘Do I Have to Bail Him Out?’ Bowen Yang Panics After Surprise FaceTime from Matt Rogers on The Today Show
In the bustling heart of New York City, where dreams are chased and friendships are forged, two young men found themselves navigating the unpredictable waters of life and career. Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, both comedians and actors, had met during their freshman year at New York University. Their connection was instant, a spark ignited by shared experiences and a mutual love for performance. They were the only openly gay members of their respective groups, and their friends often nudged them to become best friends, sensing the chemistry that was brewing.
Years later, as they both carved out successful careers in comedy, their bond only deepened. They co-hosted a popular podcast called “Las Culturistas,” which had recently been named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Best Podcasts of All Time. Their conversations were a blend of humor, culture, and candid discussions about their lives, resonating with listeners who craved authenticity in a world often filled with superficiality.
One sunny afternoon in May, Matt was co-hosting a segment on “Jenna and Friends,” a show that was a lighter, more playful counterpart to “The Today Show.” The atmosphere was lively, filled with laughter and the buzz of excitement. As part of the show, Matt decided to cold call Bowen, who was busy shooting a sketch with Anne Hathaway for Vogue. The idea was spontaneous, a playful attempt to bring Bowen into the mix and share a moment with their audience.
As the FaceTime call connected, Bowen was in the middle of a scene, dressed in a quirky outfit that was both stylish and absurd. He glanced at his phone, seeing Matt’s name flash across the screen. A wave of concern washed over him. Was Matt in trouble? Did he need help? The thought crossed his mind as he answered the call, half-expecting to hear a frantic voice on the other end.
“Hey, is everything okay?” Bowen asked, his voice laced with worry.
Matt, with his characteristic charm, grinned widely. “Of course! Just wanted to see your face and share some laughs with our audience!”
Bowen let out a sigh of relief, his initial anxiety dissipating. “You scared me for a second! I thought you were in trouble or something.”
“Not at all! Just wanted to remind everyone that I’m your 2:00 a.m. phone call, rain or shine,” Matt replied, his playful tone infectious.
The two friends bantered back and forth, their chemistry evident even through the screen. They joked about the absurdity of their lives, the pressures of fame, and the ridiculousness of the entertainment industry. Bowen shared stories from the set, including the hilarious moments that often went unrecorded, while Matt chimed in with his own anecdotes from the show.
As they continued to chat, Bowen felt a sense of gratitude wash over him. Their friendship had been a constant source of support, a safe haven in the chaotic world of show business. They had seen each other through highs and lows, celebrated successes, and navigated failures together. It was a bond that transcended the superficiality of fame, rooted in genuine care and understanding.
After a few minutes, Matt shifted the conversation. “So, what have you been up to lately? I heard you just got back from China!”
Bowen’s eyes lit up at the mention of his recent trip. “Yes! I visited my dad’s childhood home in Inner Mongolia. It was surreal. He grew up in a mud and straw hut, and seeing it in person was a powerful experience.”
Matt leaned in, intrigued. “That sounds incredible! Did you take any pictures?”
“Of course! I posted one on social media, and the comments were hilarious. People were saying I looked so masculine, which is debatable,” Bowen chuckled, recalling the reactions. “They thought I was code-switching, trying to fit in as a straight guy while I was there.”
Matt laughed, “Well, you know how the internet is! Everyone has an opinion. But honestly, I think you looked great.”
Their conversation flowed effortlessly, touching on various topics, from cultural observations to personal anecdotes. Bowen shared his experiences with acupuncture, joking about how he had failed conversion therapy and was now embracing his true self. Matt chimed in with his own humorous takes, and soon they were both laughing uncontrollably.
As the call came to an end, Bowen felt a sense of warmth and connection. “Thanks for calling, Matt. I always love our chats.”
“Me too! Let’s do this more often. And remember, if you ever need to bail me out, I’m just a FaceTime away!” Matt replied, winking at the camera.
After hanging up, Bowen returned to the set, feeling rejuvenated. The laughter and camaraderie he shared with Matt had lifted his spirits, reminding him of the importance of friendship in the often isolating world of entertainment.
Later that evening, as Bowen prepared for bed, he reflected on the day. The unexpected call from Matt had not only provided a moment of levity but had also reinforced the bond they shared. In a city that could sometimes feel overwhelming, it was comforting to know that he had someone who understood him, someone who would always be there, rain or shine.
As he drifted off to sleep, Bowen smiled, grateful for the friendships that had blossomed in the most unexpected ways. Life in New York was unpredictable, but with friends like Matt by his side, he felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. The laughter, the support, and the shared experiences were what made the journey worthwhile, and he looked forward to many more adventures with his best friend.
