What Really Happened to Tragic Teen Idol Dana Plato?
Behind the Smile of Kimberly: The Tragic Life and Legacy of Dana Plato
For millions, she was the sweet, privileged Kimberly Drummond, the perfect adoptive sister on the hit sitcom Diff’rent Strokes. But behind Dana Plato’s bright smile lay a life of mounting tragedy, a heartbreaking case study in the devastating pressures faced by child stars. Her story, culminating in a humiliating TV appearance and an early death, serves as a sobering reminder that not every Hollywood ending is a happy one.
The Downward Slope: From Teen Idol to Tragedy
Dana Plato’s life began to unravel not long after she achieved stardom.
Written Off: When she became pregnant at 18 and married rock guitarist Lanny Lambert, producers of the “wholesome” sitcom wrote her character off the show, fearing it ruined her clean-cut image.
A Cascade of Loss: The year 1988 brought devastating blows: her husband separated from her, and her adoptive mother died the same week. Soon after, due to her struggles with addiction and finances, she lost custody of her son, Tyler.
Financial Ruin: Trusting an accountant to manage her remaining money while she healed, she was betrayed. The unscrupulous advisor vanished with almost all of her fortune, leaving her with less than $150,000.
The Desperate Act: In 1991, at rock bottom, Plato entered a video store and robbed it at pellet-pistol point, demanding money. The robbery netted a mere $164. Her arrest was immortalized by the clerk’s 911 call: “I’ve just been robbed by the girl who played Kimberly on Diff’rent Strokes.” The trial judge, seeing her desperation, was lenient, handing down five years’ probation. She was even bailed out by a complete stranger, entertainer Wayne Newton.
Her attempts to rebrand her career in the 1990s—posing for Playboy, starring in low-budget films, and eventually appearing in a softcore adult movie ironically titled Different Strokes, a story of Jack and Jill and Jill—only cemented her fall from grace in the public eye.
The Final Humiliation and Death
By 1999, Dana Plato was living in a decrepit Winnebago with her fiancé, Robert Menchaca, and was desperate to prove she had turned her life around.
Her final, most public misstep came during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. She insisted she had been sober for ten years, but many callers openly mocked and questioned her claim. Flustered, she offered to take a drug test on air. The interview ended in disaster when she tearfully admitted to taking pain medication for a dental procedure—a confession that revealed she was back to misusing drugs.
Humiliated, Plato and Menchaca drove to Oklahoma to visit his family. On May 8, 1999, the day after the interview, she took a muscle relaxant and a pain pill, excused herself to the motor home, and lay down. She was found cold and lifeless hours later, having overdosed at the age of 34. Her death, initially called accidental, was later ruled a suicide due to the concentration of drugs in her system. Her net worth was a mere $1,000.
The Legacy of the “Curse”
Dana Plato’s tragedy is sadly part of a wider narrative. Her co-stars, Gary Coleman (Arnold Jackson) and Todd Bridges (Willis Jackson), also faced immense struggles. Coleman battled lifelong health issues, financial mismanagement by his parents, and legal troubles, dying from a head injury at age 42 in 2010. Bridges was also plagued by drug addiction and legal issues but has since found sobriety.
The “Diff’rent Strokes Curse” cast its final, devastating shadow over Plato’s son, Tyler Lambert. Having inherited his mother’s struggles with addiction, Tyler was never able to overcome the pain of losing her. Just days before Mother’s Day and the 11th anniversary of his mother’s passing, he took his own life at the age of 25.
In 2019, Todd Bridges paid tribute to Plato on what would have been her 55th birthday, remembering her as one of his best friends and saying: “R.I.P you are free my friend.” A heartbreaking epitaph for a star whose life was a series of tragic check marks, shattered right before the public’s eyes.
