“I thought it was a prank… until the music started,” he laughed
When Freddie Mercury passed away in 1991, the world mourned not just a singular voice but, many believed, the end of Queen as a touring force. Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor kept the band’s legacy alive through the years, but the thought of finding a new frontman felt both daunting and, to some, sacrilegious. That was until 2009, when a then-unknown Adam Lambert took the American Idol stage with May and Taylor for a live performance of “We Are the Champions.” The chemistry was instant, the reaction electric — and rock history quietly shifted.
The Call That Changed Everything
Years later, Lambert would recall the surreal moment Queen officially asked him to step in as their lead singer. “I thought it was a prank… until the music started,” he admitted — 10 words that summed up both the disbelief and thrill of being invited to join the legendary band. According to those present, Brian May’s eyes welled up as Lambert’s humility and awe filled the room. “It wasn’t just gratitude,” said one longtime crew member. “Adam genuinely couldn’t believe he was worthy of Freddie’s microphone. That hit Brian hard.”
A New Era, Not a Replacement
Since their first full tour in 2012, Queen + Adam Lambert have sold out arenas from Tokyo to London, performing hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Somebody to Love,” and “Radio Ga Ga” to a new generation of fans. Critics and Queen purists were, at first, wary. But Lambert’s refusal to impersonate Mercury — instead channeling his own theatrical style and powerhouse voice — won over even the skeptics.
“Adam doesn’t replace Freddie,” May has repeatedly emphasized. “He brings Queen into today.” Taylor agrees, describing Lambert as “the only singer we’ve ever found with the range, charisma, and confidence to hold his own.”
