Rescued from the Brink: The Miraculous Recovery of Stevie the Dog
A frail dog collapsed outside a residential area, her body emaciated from hunger and disease. Locals quickly offered her food and water, but her needs were far greater than a simple meal. Too weak to stand, her thin frame was infested with ticks and fleas. No one had seen her before—she was a stranger in this place, likely abandoned and a victim of backyard breeding.
Some people treat dogs as disposable objects, casting them aside without a second thought. Fortunately, a kind Samaritan posted her story on TikTok, and within an hour, volunteer Lynette arrived to rescue her. Without their intervention, this dog would not have survived another day.

Covered in ticks that were slowly draining her life, the dog’s gums were pale, and she had lost a significant amount of blood. She was so malnourished that her ribs protruded, and she could hardly move her limbs. Her condition was dire—a victim of extreme neglect and cruelty.
After being rushed to the vet, she underwent a series of tests. The results were grim: she was severely dehydrated, anemic, and her bloodwork showed only 5% hematocrit—far below normal. She was battling two tick-borne diseases and a dangerously high heartworm count. These illnesses were destroying her red blood cells, and the ticks were literally killing her.
At just two years old and weighing only 16 pounds, her heart was racing from exhaustion. The team began the painstaking process of removing the ticks, but her body was too weak to handle it all at once. Instead, she was given time to rest, along with IV fluids and multiple blood transfusions.
The veterinary team determined she was too fragile for conventional oral parasite medications. Instead, they opted for a gentle Frontline spray to target the ticks without stressing her delicate system. She was also suffering from hypothermia, so the medical staff worked tirelessly through the night to stabilize her temperature.
Despite her ordeal, the little dog remained calm and gentle throughout her treatment, as if she knew she was finally safe. For the first time, she was surrounded by warmth and love, no longer just a plaything for those who had mistreated her. Her painful past was over, and her second chance at life had begun. She was given a new name: Stevie.

After carefully removing the ticks, Stevie spent the night at the San Antonio Veterinary Hospital before transferring to Austin for continued care. She was stable enough to be transported, but still required hospitalization. Her blood counts improved after transfusions, and she slowly regained her strength, even eating on her own.
Stevie received her first bath, revealing her sweet and resilient spirit. But her struggle wasn’t over—her levels dropped again, and she needed a second emergency transfusion. Thankfully, her progress continued, and her numbers steadily increased.
Finally, Dr. Shane Daigle declared Stevie well enough to go to a foster home. Her red blood cells began to regenerate on their own after multiple transfusions, a testament to her incredible will to survive. Stevie’s journey shows that with the right support, even the most desperate cases can overcome the toughest battles.
Stevie’s happiest moment came when she was welcomed into the loving home of Erika Rix and her husband. Though she hadn’t been indoors in a long time—perhaps ever—she immediately wagged her tail and felt safe. Under their care, she began to thrive, making remarkable progress every day.
Against all odds, Stevie survived with a critically low PCV of just 6%, a feat almost unheard of in veterinary medicine. Now, she walks, wags her tail, and enjoys the affection of her foster family. Stevie’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of animals and the impact of compassion.
