From Euthanasia List to Beloved Companion: How Dexter the Dog Found His Forever Home

For Dexter, a big tan pitbull mix with no name and little hope, life in 2019 seemed bleak. Discovered wandering the streets of Georgia severely underweight and suffering from fur loss due to fleas and sun damage, Dexter ended up at a local shelter—where he quickly found himself on the euthanasia list, simply because no one wanted to adopt him.

Dexter’s story might have ended there, like it does for so many southern US “bully breeds” that face slim odds of finding new families once surrendered to shelters. Despite being house-trained and knowing basic commands, Dexter waited for weeks without a single inquiry.

That changed when a rescue organization called “Fly with Me” noticed Dexter’s sad, gentle eyes and spirited photo. Shelter staff described him only as a “big tanned man,” but volunteers saw something special. The moment rescuers met Dexter, he greeted them with joyful enthusiasm, immediately jumping up as if reuniting with old friends.

No one wanted him, and he was going to be euthanized, but when I adopted him, everything changed.

For most rescue dogs, adjusting to a new home takes time. But Dexter settled in effortlessly. When he arrived at his new forever home with Mark and his fiancé, Dexter quickly bonded with their cat Zoe, always choosing to nap beside her in a new-found sense of safety.

“We tried to set ground rules—no dogs on the couch or bed—but after just a few days, I was the one breaking the rules,” Mark admits. “My fiancé still teases me about the day she walked in to find me and Dexter napping together. He’s the friendliest dog I’ve ever met.”

Unfortunately, not everyone in the community shared Mark’s affection. On a walk one day, an elderly passerby harshly declared, “That creature is going to attack you in your sleep one night.” The comment left Mark bewildered and saddened by the stigma bully breeds still face.

Yet, Dexter turned out to be a loving companion and more. Not long after adopting him, Mark was diagnosed with lupus and developed a blood clot in his right leg. Dexter’s soothing presence became an anchor during the toughest times. Mark describes Dexter as “a therapist,” so attuned to his emotions he instinctively offers comfort just by being near.

“Even if I don’t say a word or move, Dexter somehow knows when I’m stressed. He just quietly comes over and lies down on my lap. Suddenly everything feels easier.”

Dexter’s energy also inspired Mark to stay active. The pair love beach outings, hallway sprints, digging missions, and playful jumps onto the bed—the joys that define Dexter’s second chance at life.

Mark urges others to consider pet adoption. “If you enjoyed our story, please subscribe, like, and share your thoughts in the comments. And if you’re thinking about adopting a pet, be sure to consult with the proper authorities first. There are so many pets like Dexter waiting for a second chance.”
