In a moving story of hope and resilience, Bami, a severely neglected poodle, has found a new lease on life thanks to the unwavering dedication of the Korean Animal Welfare Association (KAWA) and compassionate individuals like Director Kim.

Bami’s ordeal began long before he arrived at KAWA’s ON Center. His fur was so tangled and matted that it resembled armor, restricting his movement and causing him immense discomfort. When Director Kim first saw Bami, even the seasoned activists were shocked by the dog’s condition—no one at the center had ever seen a dog with such severe matting.

Before heading to the center, Director Kim thoughtfully purchased new clothes and snacks for Bami, hoping to bring some comfort to the anxious dog. Upon arrival, Bami was clearly nervous, drinking large amounts of water and unable to sit properly due to the painful mats in his fur. What should have been simple, everyday actions—like sitting or moving—were nearly impossible for him.

The process of shaving Bami’s tangled fur was both physically and emotionally taxing. The mats were so tight, especially around his legs, that even scissors couldn’t cut through them. Director Kim and the staff had to proceed slowly and carefully, constantly checking Bami’s condition and taking breaks to avoid overwhelming him. The removal of the mats revealed hidden toenails and inflamed skin, highlighting the suffering Bami had endured for so long.

Despite the pain and fear, Bami gradually began to trust his rescuers. Director Kim’s patience and gentle approach helped calm Bami, and eventually, the last of the heavy fur was removed. For the first time, Bami’s true face was revealed—a moment of relief and joy for both dog and rescuers. With his matted fur gone, Bami’s steps became lighter, and his eyes brighter.

After receiving necessary medical treatment and a much-needed bath, Bami was dressed in his new clothes, which fit perfectly. He was also given a new name, “Saeroi,” symbolizing his fresh start. Director Kim expressed hope that Saeroi would soon find a loving forever home.

A few days later, Saeroi had already adapted well to life at the center. He was playful and active, his transformation complete. The staff at KAWA continue to care for him as he waits for adoption, along with many other rescued animals at the Suwon Seryu Welfare Center.

Saeroi’s journey from neglect to happiness is a testament to the power of compassion and second chances. The Korean Animal Welfare Association encourages everyone to consider adoption and offer a warm touch to animals in need—because for dogs like Saeroi, your kindness is their greatest joy.
