Driving along the blueberry fields, Shaya spotted what she thought was a garbage bag—until she realized it was a dog, motionless and in distress. Her heart sank as she approached, finding the dog unresponsive and suffering from a badly injured leg. “Everything in her face was just calling out for help,” Shaya recalled.

Determined to help, Shaya gently fashioned a slip lead from her fanny pack strap. Despite her fear and pain, the dog—soon named Blueberry—allowed Shaya to secure her and bring her to safety. After a careful 30 to 40 minutes, Shaya, who works for the Regional Animal Protection Society, called ahead to ensure Blueberry would receive immediate care.

At the shelter, Blueberry was calm and cooperative during her initial exam, but no microchip was found. She went home with Shaya, and two days later underwent surgery for her injured leg. Blueberry recovered remarkably well, enduring a three-month rehabilitation with patience and a sweet spirit.

Introducing Blueberry to Shaya’s other pets was seamless. One of the family cats, acting like a friendly greeter, immediately welcomed Blueberry, much to her delight. Though Shaya initially insisted Blueberry was just a foster, it soon became clear that they belonged together.

Reflecting on Blueberry’s journey from abandonment to recovery, Shaya is amazed by her resilience and loving nature. “She obviously went through some pretty horrible things and yet she is able to come through that and out of it a really super loving dog,” Shaya said. Now, happily adopted, Blueberry enjoys a new life filled with love, proving that even in the darkest moments, hope and compassion can lead to a beautiful new beginning.
