Our reporter recently paid a nerve-wracking visit to one of Kenya’s premier German Shepherd breeding kennels, where the sheer size and energy of the dogs were both intimidating and impressive.

Meeting the Man Behind the Dogs

Brian Okumu, founder of Kels, a renowned kennel in Nairobi, greeted us warmly—though his canine companions provided a much less gentle welcome. “Some of these dogs are so big, if they stood up on their hind legs, they’d be my height,” he remarked. Names like Goran, Mondoo, Messi, and Rocky dominate his pack, many of them descendants from champion bloodlines imported from Poland.

Despite the intimidation, Okumu’s love for dogs is clear—though he is, by profession, a medical doctor specializing in human health. “Fifteen years ago, I got into German Shepherds after my mother had security concerns on our farm. A friend suggested dogs, and we started with two or three,” he recalls. “It’s become a rewarding journey.”

The Science and Heart of Breeding

Okumu’s kennel, fully registered with the Kenya Kennel Club, focuses on both pedigree and care. “All our dogs—up to 30 at the moment, puppies included—can trace their lineage. Some hail from champion lines recognized worldwide,” he explains. Breeding is both an art and a science: “We source from Poland but also do local breeding. We let clients choose from puppies ready for adoption, usually after they’re weaned, vaccinated, and microchipped at around 8-10 weeks.”

He insists the business is more passion than profit: “It’s a hobby for me. I see it as a calling, like medicine.”

Why German Shepherds? Experts and breeders alike point to three main traits:

Intelligence: One of the world’s most intelligent dogs, German Shepherds are easy to train and highly adaptable.

Energy: German Shepherds are energetic and always ready to work or play—never “throwing moods,” as Okumu puts it.

“Add all that up,” says a local specialist, “and you have a dog that can be family-friendly, a reliable companion, or a working partner for security and service roles.”

Practical Considerations

While their impressive stature and protective instincts can intimidate outsiders, Okumu assures that the dogs are safe when properly socialized: “You’ll usually only find the puppies out—adults are secure in their quarters unless they’re on duty. Visitors accompanied by our staff are safe, but uninvited guests at night should beware.”

Show dogs are the focus at Kels. “Ours are not working lines, but show lines—bred for temperament and appearance,” he adds. Still, he says, “With the right training, a German Shepherd can do almost anything.”
