Tiao Tiao’s Story
When we first saw Tiao Tiao, his tail was wagging frantically. It felt as if he had been waiting for us for a long time.
Tiao Tiao was lying on the roadside, motionless from the waist down. He had clearly been paralyzed for some time. His hind legs were covered in sores and badly infected, and he had deep pressure ulcers on his hips and tail. Flies swarmed around him. He was trying to crawl toward a discarded plastic bag, hoping to find something to eat. Despite everything, when he saw us, his eyes lit up with joy and hope. He wagged his tail nonstop—his way of saying, “Please don’t leave me behind.”
That day, we took Tiao Tiao home.

His first bath revealed the true extent of his injuries. He was so thin, all bones and skin. When we applied antiseptic, he trembled from the pain but didn’t resist. He trusted us, even when he was hurting.
We rushed him to the hospital. The vet said the paralysis was likely caused by an old spinal injury. Surgery wouldn’t help him walk again. But Tiao Tiao hadn’t given up on himself—and we weren’t going to give up on him either.
Every day after that, we did physical therapy with him. We massaged his legs, helped him stretch, and encouraged him to move. At first, he could only drag himself forward a little. But soon, he started to stand—with a wheelchair, then on his own for a few seconds. Every step was hard-won, but he never stopped trying.
Tiao Tiao’s strength amazed us.
It wasn’t just his body that was healing—his spirit, too, began to shine. He became playful, affectionate, and deeply attached to us. He loved his wheelchair. Every time we strapped him in, he’d race around the yard, barking happily like a normal dog.
One day, as I sat beside him brushing his fur, he leaned his head against my hand and sighed. It was the first time he’d truly relaxed. In that moment, I knew: he finally felt safe.
Tiao Tiao reminded us what it means to be brave—not just to survive, but to live with hope, love, and joy.
Thank you for walking this journey with us.
