When volunteers found Oscar at an animal control center, he was barely able to move and unresponsive to the world around him. Limping, with inflamed skin and crusted-over eyes, Oscar looked utterly defeated. His ears had been cropped, and his spirit seemed broken—as if he had stopped expecting anything good from life. The severity of his condition landed him on the euthanasia list, but the volunteers saw something in Oscar that made them believe he still deserved a chance.
Oscar was taken into their care, and his recovery began. It was a slow process, requiring not only medical treatment but also quiet compassion and simple presence. When the infection in his ears proved untreatable, veterinarians performed a full ablation, leaving Oscar almost completely deaf. Yet, even with this new challenge, hope was on the horizon.
That hope arrived in the form of Kristen and her husband, Ryan. The couple met Oscar and immediately knew he belonged with them. They welcomed him into their home, determined to give him the love and security he had never known.
In those first days, Oscar moved carefully through his new surroundings. He didn’t hide, but he explored slowly, as if testing whether it was safe to finally let his guard down. Though he couldn’t hear, Oscar seemed to sense when someone was nearby, watching Kristen and Ryan with quiet curiosity.
Soon, Kristen noticed something unusual about Oscar. He loved the gentle sensation of things brushing against his face or back—curtains, leaves, bits of yarn. He would walk through them slowly, savoring every touch. Kristen called this unique habit “slothing.” It was Oscar’s way of unwinding and feeling good in his own world.
As time passed, it became clear that slothing was more than just a quirky habit—it was a part of who Oscar was. Wanting to make him as happy as possible, Kristen set up special slothing posts throughout the house, hanging yarn and tassels in doorways and along walls. Ryan even built a slothing zone in the backyard, filled with leaves. Oscar would step into these spaces slowly, eyes half-closed and tail gently swaying, as if he were walking into a warm embrace.
Oscar didn’t just become part of the family—he became its center. Kristen and Ryan affectionately nicknamed him “Ham” because of his cartoonish, lovable appearance. With Oscar in their lives, everything felt warmer, softer, and happier.
Every day with Oscar is a reminder of how much one unexpected meeting can change a life. Kristen and Ryan can no longer imagine their home without him, and Oscar—once abandoned and hopeless—now lives at the heart of a family who loves him for exactly who he is.
