From Euthanasia List to Loving Home: The Heartwarming Rescue of Ruby
When one woman learned that a terrified pitbull mix was on the shelter’s euthanasia list, she knew she had to act fast. “Something terrible just happened,” she told her boyfriend over the phone. The dog, later named Ruby, was out of time—scheduled to be euthanized by noon, with just an hour to spare.
Encouraged by her boyfriend’s words, “Go get her, she’s a hugger,” she drove an hour and a half, hoping Ruby would still be there. Arriving just as the shelter opened, she was relieved to find Ruby waiting for her. The long drive home became the first step in Ruby’s journey to safety and love.

From the very beginning, Ruby clung to her rescuer for reassurance. On their first walk together, Ruby would stop every few steps, seeking a hug and comfort. The first few days were tough—Ruby was skittish, constantly on edge, and would freeze in fear, even hiding in the kitchen during dinner. She also smelled bad, but because she had just been spayed, she couldn’t be bathed for ten days. Despite the odor, her new family showered her with affection.
Adjusting to her new environment was challenging, especially with two other dogs in the house. They were separated by baby gates at first, but Ruby gradually began to emerge from her shell. She started to relax, enjoying the comfort of a soft bed instead of the cold shelter floor. Soon, she was playing with her new family, showing her playful and energetic side. She learned to fetch a tennis ball and delighted in every meal.
It’s believed that Ruby’s breed—a pitbull mix—was a major reason she was overlooked for adoption. “People just avoid those in the shelters,” her rescuer noted. But Ruby proved to be incredibly affectionate, sweet, and beautiful—a dog full of love who simply needed a chance.
Reflecting on Ruby’s transformation, her rescuer said, “It’s been really rewarding to see the transformation of a shut down, scared shelter dog into the healthy, silly puppy she always deserved to be.” Ruby’s journey is a powerful reminder of the lives that can be saved through compassion and determination, and the joy that rescued animals can bring to their new families.
