Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham’s breakup early in the recording of Fleetwood Mac’s legendary album Rumours has long been known as one of rock’s most intense and emotional stories. The two ended their relationship just two months into the sessions, and their personal turmoil is reflected in the songs they contributed to the album. Nicks has shared that while their problems existed beforehand, the breakup made everything much worse, leaving her feeling helpless to repair the fractured relationship or gain Buckingham’s favor.
Early Relationship Challenges
Nicks and Buckingham met as teenagers and began dating when they relocated to Los Angeles, aiming to make it as a musical duo. However, their relationship was complicated from the start.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Nicks reflected, “Whether rich and famous or struggling and poor, we faced the same challenges. Lindsey wanted me all to himself, but someone had to be out earning money. He was focused on his music, and when I came home, I’d often get the cold shoulder. He didn’t fully trust where I’d been or what I’d been doing.”
This lack of trust and emotional strain built tension even before the breakup, making their relationship fragile.
Life After the Breakup: A Nightmare
The split happened roughly two years after Nicks and Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac and right in the midst of the Rumours sessions. The breakup only deepened the difficulties between them.
Nicks described this period as “like a living nightmare,” explaining, “Everything about me seemed to bug him—my laughter, how I could handle difficult things—it made him cringe.”
To cope with the tense atmosphere, Nicks said she altered her behavior around Buckingham, becoming quiet and submissive. “I became mouse-like and wouldn’t dare offer a suggestion,” she recalled, trying to avoid provoking him further.
This raw insight into one of rock’s most famous breakups sheds light on the emotional backdrop behind Rumours, one of the most celebrated albums in music history.
