From Forgotten to Beloved: The Remarkable Journey of Arthur, the Old Rescue Dog
He was old, deaf, and toothless. No one paid him any attention. For an entire year, not a single adoption application was submitted for him. It seemed the world had long since given up on Arthur. But that was only the beginning of his true story—a story about how the most forgotten can become the most cherished.
Arthur had wandered the streets of Tiana for a long time. His eyes were dull, his fur matted, and his spirit weary. When the staff at Friends Rescue Foundation found him, they immediately understood that this elderly dog wouldn’t survive much longer without help. He was brought into their care, but hope for his future seemed dim.

Arthur spent almost a year at the rescue. His profile remained in the adoption catalog, but people simply walked by. Perhaps it was his age, his deafness, or the fact that he was missing most of his teeth. Maybe he just seemed too ordinary next to the dozens of young, lively, photogenic dogs. Regardless of the reason, Arthur waited—and waited.
But then, everything changed. The moment I saw Arthur, I knew he was meant to be my dog.
Bringing Arthur home, I could see he was unsure and wary. The world he’d known had never given him a reason to trust anyone. He was afraid of silence, afraid of being touched, afraid of simply existing. So, I gave him what he needed most: time, peace, and love.
At first, Arthur lay quietly and unobtrusively, blending into the background. But gradually, he began to change. He started coming closer, looking into my eyes. One day, he rolled onto his back and lay there, gazing up at me. It always makes me smile. Arthur loves to cuddle, but only at night. During the day, he’s a proud explorer, wandering around the house with quiet dignity, as if everything belongs to him. At night, he burrows into me, warm and trusting, as if to say, “I am safe now.”
Arthur formed a special bond with Ace, my blind dog. Ace doesn’t guide Arthur, but he allows him to be nearby and helps him find his way. There’s a silent brotherhood between these two old souls, each with their own peculiarities, yet united as one.
To help Arthur adjust, I taught him to understand different types of touch. A tap on the shoulder means “wake up,” a tap on the chest means “let’s go,” and a gentle stroke means “everything’s fine.” Arthur feels every movement. When I touch his shoulder while he’s sleeping, he startles at first, but then recognizes me and calms down.
We don’t know exactly how old Arthur is—veterinarians estimate he’s between 15 and 18 years old. In his eyes, I see a lifetime: so much pain, but also incredible strength. When he’s anxious, he comes to me and presses against my legs. It’s his way of saying, “I’m not sure, but I feel safe with you.” In those moments, I know I have to be his support.
What pains me most is thinking about how Arthur might not have survived all those years on the streets, how he lived so long without ever knowing affection. It hurts to imagine. Arthur is the gentlest, meekest, and most courageous creature I’ve ever known, with four legs and a soul big enough to contain the universe.
My only regret is that I didn’t find him sooner. He deserves the best, and I will do everything I can to make sure he knows that.
