On Wednesday, March 26, Carnegie Hall hosted a star-studded jam. Bruce Springsteen and Flea shared the stage to perform “Because the Night.”

The performance was part of the People Have the Power: A Celebration of Patti Smith event . A tribute to the New York artist, the proceeds of which went to music programs for at-risk youth.

According to Ultimate Classic Rock , Springsteen and Flea were joined by Tony Shanahan, Charlie Sexton, and Steve Jordan . Shanahan has been a member of Smith ‘s band for many years. Sexton is a regular touring guitarist for Bob Dylan . Jordan , meanwhile, is the touring drummer for the Rolling Stones.

A song with history

“Because the Night” was written by Bruce Springsteen in 1977, but never finished. His producer Jimmy Iovine gave a tape to Patti Smith , who wrote the final lyrics and recorded them with her band.

The song was included on the album Easter (1978) and became a hit, reaching number 13 in the US and number 5 in the UK .

“I was a big fan of Patti’s, you know,” Springsteen recounted in the book Why Patti Smith Matters . “I was glad she found something she could do with the song, you know, because that song would still be in my archives if it weren’t for her.”

A star-studded evening

The tribute brought together artists such as Karen O , Michael Stipe , Matt Berninger , and Johnny Depp . The latter surprised everyone by taking the stage alongside Alison Mosshart to perform “Dancing Barefoot.”

Celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson , Jim Jarmusch , and Sean Penn also participated , reciting poetry written by Smith .

Smith closed the evening by performing ” People Have the Power ” alongside all the guests. It was a moving and vibrant tribute to one of punk’s most influential figures .

In Springsteen ‘s words , “Because the Night” would have been forgotten if it weren’t for Patti Smith . The night at Carnegie Hall was a celebration of that immortal collaboration.
