A Journey of Love and Determination
Lucille O’Neal didn’t have an easy start. At the age of 17, she became a young mother, trying to raise her son Shaquille amidst financial hardships. As she put it, “You have no idea what you’re doing at 17, but you do the best you can with what you’ve got.” Despite the challenges, Lucille managed to provide for her children, ensuring they felt love and stability in a world that often didn’t offer much in return. “I wasn’t disciplined,” she laughed, “but I was loving. I did my best, and that’s all anyone can do.”
Lucille spoke about the strength of family and how they banded together to get through the hard times. With little to no money and not enough food or clothes, Lucille was often in a state of worry. But she never let her children feel the burden of those struggles. “What helped us most was that we stuck together as a family. The love and support we shared was all we needed to keep going.”
A Promise to Shaquille
From an early age, it was clear that Shaquille was destined for greatness. Lucille recalled a moment when Shaquille’s grandmother had told her, “This one is special. Watch out for this one.” At the time, Lucille didn’t understand the significance of the statement. “I didn’t really know what she meant at the time, but now I see it,” Lucille said. Despite their modest beginnings, Shaquille’s talent was undeniable, and as Lucille raised him, she nurtured that gift.
As Shaquille grew, so did his aspirations. “He told me once that he would be a professional basketball player. I believed him,” Lucille said. But even as Shaquille worked toward his dreams, Lucille remained committed to his education. “No pass, no play,” she emphasized. She made sure that all of her children understood the importance of their education, making sure that no matter how athletic they were, their studies came first.
Lucille’s belief in her son’s potential never wavered. She would always encourage him to push harder, be better, and to believe in himself. “Shaquille worked so hard, and that work paid off. He made a promise to me that he would finish school, and he did. Even when he was playing in the NBA, he promised me he would come back to finish his degree. And he did,” Lucille proudly shared.
The Road to the NBA
It was when Shaquille was in college at LSU that Lucille started to realize the enormity of his talent. She remembered the moment clearly: Shaquille had just played in the McDonald’s All-American game, and Lucille began to realize that her son’s career could be something much bigger than she had initially imagined. “It was at that moment that I realized, ‘Wow, this is real.’”
Despite all the signs pointing to Shaquille’s future in the NBA, Lucille still had a mother’s concern for her son’s future. “I wanted him to finish his college education. I didn’t want him to rush into the NBA without a backup plan,” Lucille recalled. But Shaquille was ready. “He told me, ‘Mom, it’s time. I can’t stay here anymore. I’m ready for the next step.’ And I knew it was his time,” she said.
After three years of college basketball, Shaquille was drafted into the NBA. But despite his monumental success, Lucille’s maternal instincts kicked in. “Even after he was drafted, I couldn’t just let go. I traveled with him during his first year in the league. I wanted to be there to support him every step of the way,” she said, remembering those early days of Shaquille’s professional career.
Behind the Scenes of Shaquille’s Success
What followed was a career that changed the landscape of the NBA. From his iconic moments with the Orlando Magic to his legendary championship runs with the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaquille became a household name. And throughout it all, Lucille was there, watching her son’s every move with pride.
But being the mother of an NBA superstar wasn’t always easy. Lucille spoke about how Shaquille’s celebrity often drew unwanted attention, and how she had to learn to navigate the pressures that came with it. “When you’re in the public eye, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by all the attention,” Lucille shared. “But I had to remember that my son worked so hard to get to where he is, and I wasn’t going to let anything stand in his way.”
One of Lucille’s most treasured memories is from the night when Shaquille’s jersey was retired by the Lakers. “It was electric. I cried because I was so happy for him,” she said. “To see his dreams manifest right in front of me, in front of everyone—it was an overwhelming feeling of pride and gratitude.”
A Mother’s Love and Shaquille’s Favorite Meal
But amid all the glitz and glamour of the NBA, Shaquille’s heart remained with his family, especially his mother. Lucille shared a touching moment with her son, recalling how they had a special routine before every game. “When he was playing, I would always give him bubblegum and a kiss before the game,” Lucille said. “And I would tell him to play his game, no matter what.”
One of the sweetest moments of the interview was when Lucille revealed Shaquille’s favorite meal: “Lil Shaq Easy Mac.” Lucille explained the simple yet heartfelt recipe, which she called “Lil Shaq Easy Mac,” a playful twist on macaroni and cheese. “It’s just mac and cheese with a few extra ingredients—cheese, milk, eggs, a little flour for consistency, and then I top it off with breadcrumbs and more cheese,” she said.
The joy in Lucille’s voice was evident as she reminisced about how Shaquille would devour the dish, sometimes eating a whole plate by himself. “He loved it so much. Sometimes he’d just have a big plate of it, no meat, just the mac and cheese,” she said, laughing. “That’s my boy.”
The Blessing of Family
When asked about the greatest blessing in her life, Lucille paused, her eyes reflecting years of wisdom and gratitude. “It’s the journey. The ups, the downs, the struggles. It’s all been worth it,” she said. “I’ve seen my son go from nothing to becoming one of the greatest basketball players in the world, and I couldn’t be prouder. It’s a blessing to witness.”
Shaquille O’Neal’s success story is one of sheer determination and hard work, but at its core, it is a story of family and love. Lucille O’Neal has played an integral role in her son’s rise to greatness, offering unwavering support, wisdom, and, most importantly, a mother’s love.
As Lucille shared her pride in Shaquille’s accomplishments, it was clear that, while the world may know Shaquille O’Neal as an NBA legend, to his mom, he’s simply “Shaquille”—her son, her pride, and her blessing.
