Tucked behind the Crimean peninsula and connected to the Black Sea by the narrow bottleneck of the Kerch Strait, the shallow body of water served as a protected rear-area logistics hub. It was a space where Moscow could move military hardware, export grain, and transfer millions of barrels of crude oil far out of reach of Ukrainian ground forces.
Today, that sanctuary has turned into a burning graveyard of Russian commercial and naval shipping—not despite Moscow’s strategic decisions, but directly because of them.
