The Old Envelope

It was 11:00 in the morning. In the largest bank of the city, an elderly man dressed in simple clothes and holding an old envelope in his hand entered. As he stepped inside, all the customers and bank employees present began to look at him strangely.

This elderly man’s name was Abdul Kadir Sahib. In one hand, Abdul Kadir Sahib held a walking stick and in the other, that old envelope. He slowly walked towards the counter made for customers.

At this counter sat a female employee named Aisha. Every single person inside the bank kept their eyes fixed on Abdul Kadir Sahib. Slowly, Abdul Kadir Sahib reached Aisha and said very politely, “Look, Betty, there is some problem with my account. It is not working properly.” Saying this, Abdul Kadir Sahib extended the envelope towards Aisha.

But Aisha, judging him by his clothing, said, “Baba, perhaps you have come to the wrong bank. I don’t think your account is in this bank.” At that moment, Abdul Kadir Sahib calmly replied, “Betty, just check once. Maybe my account really is in this bank.”

Aisha took the envelope and said, “Baba, this will take some time to look into. You will have to wait a little.” Saying this, Aisha and the other people in the bank got busy with their work. Abdul Kadir Sahib stood there waiting.

After waiting for some time, he again said, “Betty, if you are a little busy, then please call the manager. Actually, I also have some work with him. I haven’t spoken to him yet.” Unwillingly, Aisha picked up the phone and called the cabin of the manager, Sahed Ahmed. She informed the manager that an old man wanted to meet him.

Manager Sahed Ahmed looked from afar at Abdul Kadir Sahib. He seemed very ordinary. On the phone, the manager asked Aisha, “Is this man one of our bank’s customers or has he just walked in randomly?” Aisha replied, “Sir, I don’t know that, but he is saying he wants to meet you.” The manager said, “I don’t have time for people like this. Just make him sit there. After waiting a while, he will leave on his own.”

Following the manager’s instructions, Aisha seated Abdul Kadir Sahib in the waiting area. She said, “Baba, please sit over there. After some time, the manager Sahib will be free, then he will meet you.” Abdul Kadir Sahib walked over to the waiting area and sat down on a chair kept in the corner.

Everyone was still staring at him because the customers who usually came to this bank were all dressed in suits and expensive clothes. But Abdul Kadir Sahib was in plain dress. It didn’t look at all like he could even have an account in such a bank because this bank usually had accounts of wealthy people.

For this reason, Abdul Kadir Sahib became the center of everyone’s attention and people kept turning to look at him and whispering different things about him. These words also reached the ears of Abdul Kadir Sahib. But he ignored them and kept waiting for his turn. He thought after a while the manager will come. I will speak to him directly.

Inside the bank there was another person who worked in a junior position. His name was Imran. Imran had gone outside at that time. When he returned, he saw an elderly man sitting in the waiting area towards whom everyone was staring and speaking different things. Some were calling him a beggar. Some were saying, “There’s no way he has an account in this bank. How did he even come here? Why was such a person allowed to sit inside?”

Imran overheard all of it. He felt very bad hearing such talk. Looking at the old man’s condition, he became a little uneasy and that is why he went to ask him. Imran asked respectfully, “Baba, why have you come here? What is your work?”

Abdul Kadir Sahib told Imran, “I need to meet the manager. I have some work with him.” Hearing this, Imran said, “All right, Baba, please wait here for a moment. I will go speak to the manager right away.” Imran went into the cabin of manager Sahed Ahmed and spoke about the old man. But manager Sahed Ahmed already knew about him and said, “I know. I was the one who made him sit there. After sitting for some time, he will leave.” Then the manager told Imran about other work and said, “You go do your job. You don’t need to bother about this matter.”

Imran got busy with other tasks. Meanwhile, that elderly man sat there slowly passing almost an hour. After waiting patiently for one full hour, he could no longer tolerate it. He stood up and walked towards the cabin of manager Sahed Ahmed.

As he was going towards the manager’s cabin, the manager saw that the old man was coming towards him. Immediately he came out of the cabin, stood before him, and arrogantly asked, “Yes, Baba, tell me, what do you want?”

Abdul Kadir Sahib extended the envelope and began to speak. “Baba, please look at this. Inside is the detail of my bank account. No transactions are happening from my account. Please check and tell me what the problem is.”

Hearing this, manager Sahed Ahmed thought for a moment and said, “Baba, when there is no money in a bank account, this is exactly what happens. I think you have not deposited money into your account. That is why your account’s transactions have been stopped.”

Then the elderly man began to speak very politely. “Baba, at least check my account once. After that whatever you say will be correct. How can you say such a thing without looking?” At that point, manager Sahed Ahmed began to laugh and said, “Baba, this is years of experience. I have done this work for many years. By looking at the faces of people like you, I can tell what kind of person they are and how much money they have in their account. I don’t see anything in your account. I want you to leave here now. All the customers are looking at you. An unusual atmosphere is forming inside the bank.”

Then Abdul Kadir Sahib placed the envelope on his table and said, “All right, Baba. I am leaving. But at least take a look once at the details written in this envelope.” Saying this, Abdul Kadir Sahib turned to leave. And as he reached the door, suddenly he turned back and said, “Baba, for doing all this, you will have to face a very bad consequence.” Saying this, Abdul Kadir Sahib went out through the main door of the bank and walked away.

Afterwards, when manager Sahed Ahmed remembered that the man had said he would suffer greatly, he became a little worried but later he thought, in old age sometimes people just say such things, no problem.

Manager Sahed Ahmed went back to his cabin. Already on the table lay that envelope inside which was written the details of the old man’s bank account. Then Imran picked up the envelope and logged into his computer server and began to search according to the information given inside.

While searching, when the old records were checked, he discovered that this man who had come was actually one of the owners of the bank because 60% of the bank’s shares belonged to him.

Hearing this, Imran was very surprised and began to read the details more carefully. After reading, he became fully certain that this man was indeed the owner of the bank. Imran printed out a copy of the report and took it to manager Sahed Ahmed.

At that time, manager Sahed Ahmed was inside his cabin talking to a wealthy client and explaining different schemes. Imran entered the cabin. The manager gestured asking him why he had come. Imran signaled that this was the report of the man whom he had dismissed so casually. “It would be good if you saw it once,” Imran said, placing the report on the manager’s table.

But the manager, excusing himself from his client for a moment, said, “Look, Imran, we have no time for such people.” Imran respectfully said, “If you look at this once, it would be very good.” But manager Sahed Ahmed pushed the report forward and said, “I don’t want to see this. I have no interest in such customers.” Saying this, he slid the report back to Imran and Imran went back to his work.

The atmosphere inside the bank had now calmed down. Everyone got busy with their tasks and gradually evening came.

The next day, at the same time as before, Abdul Kadir Sahib returned, but this time with him was a man in a suit carrying a briefcase. As they entered, they caught everyone’s attention. Then he gestured for manager Sahed Ahmed to come to him.

The manager nervously came out of his cabin and stood in front of Abdul Kadir Sahib. Then Abdul Kadir Sahib said to the manager, “Manager Sahib, did I not tell you that this matter would become too heavy for you? What you did with me yesterday was completely intolerable. Now you must prepare to face your punishment.”

Hearing this, manager Sahed Ahmed was a little stunned. But then he thought, “What punishment can they give me? What can they even do to me?”

Then Abdul Kadir Sahib said, “You are being removed from the post of manager and in your place, Imran who works in this bank is being made the new manager and you will be assigned to fieldwork.” Hearing this, manager Sahed Ahmed was shocked and began to say, “Who are you to remove me like this?”

Then Abdul Kadir Sahib replied, “Consider me as one of the owners of this bank because 60% of the shares belong to me. If I wish, I can remove you and place someone else in your position.” Hearing this, all the employees of the bank and the customers who had come yesterday and today looked at Abdul Kadir Sahib in astonishment.

Then the man who had come with Abdul Kadir Sahib opened his suitcase and took out a document. It was the promotion letter for Imran appointing him as the new bank manager. Then another letter was taken out which was given to manager Sahed Ahmed saying if you wish you may continue doing field duty but you cannot remain as manager in this bank.

Hearing this, sweat began to pour from manager Sahed Ahmed and he started begging forgiveness from the elderly man for his mistake yesterday. But then Abdul Kadir Sahib stood him up and said, “For what are you asking forgiveness? And why should I forgive you? The way you behaved with me was against the principles of our bank. Have you never read the bank’s policy? Here there will be no discrimination between rich and poor. Everyone will be judged on the same scale. In fact, this bank was established by me, Abdul Kadir, myself. And I had already declared that no one here will be treated as poor or overly rich. Everyone will be treated equally. And if any bank employee acts otherwise, strict action will be taken against him.

So Abdul Kadir Sahib said, “I am showing mercy by keeping you employed. Otherwise, if I wished, I could have dismissed you completely. What you did with me yesterday should not be done with anyone. Look at Imran who worked in this bank. He had nothing in his hands. Yet he still came to me, asked about my need, and wanted to do something for me. That is why he is the rightful one for this position so that he can understand customers properly and not judge them by their clothing.”

Saying this, Abdul Kadir Sahib called Aisha and also scolded her on this matter. He said, “I am forgiving you considering it your first mistake. But when someone comes into the bank, do not judge him by his clothes. You must look properly into his matter. If you had handled me properly yesterday, then I would not have needed to go to the manager and I would not have faced such humiliation.”

Aisha folded her hands and began asking for forgiveness, saying, “Baba ji, please forgive me. I have made a very big mistake. From now on, you will never see such a thing.” After this, Abdul Kadir Sahib left with that man and said to everyone, “There is much you need to learn from Imran, learn as much as you can. It will be good for you. From now on, I will occasionally send someone who will report to me about your conduct.”

Saying this, Abdul Kadir Sahib left the place and the entire bank staff began discussing the matter thinking that now they must work properly otherwise next time their turn might come.

Thinking this way, the whole bank corrected itself and everyone began to work properly. The incident of Abdul Kadir Sahib spread everywhere and everyone began praising that bank, saying if an owner should be, then he should be like this. Otherwise, it is better not to be, because most owners open their bank and then disappear. After that, they do not care what kind of work the manager does or how the employees behave. But Abdul Kadir Sahib fulfilled his responsibility as an owner completely and gave a good lesson to the employees of the bank.
