Let me introduce you to Flor, a remarkable little dog whose journey is a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of compassion.
Flor’s story begins at the border, where she had just crossed into safety. But her arrival was anything but easy. Flor was in critical condition—her body covered in bite wounds, and her front left leg so badly broken that the bone was exposed. The rescuer who brought Flor to me said she couldn’t move at all.
Yet, when I gently placed her in my car, Flor lifted her head and looked at me. In her big, sorrowful eyes, I saw not just pain, but an unbreakable will to live. When we reached the emergency room, she surprised us all by sitting up on her own. It was in that moment I knew: this little girl was determined to survive.
With no time to spare, the veterinary team began calling her Flor—a name that suited her sweet, gentle spirit perfectly. She was quickly admitted to the hospital, and together we approved a special treatment plan to give her the best chance at recovery.
At first, it seemed Flor would need an emergency amputation on Thanksgiving Day. I called every hospital I could, searching desperately for a surgeon, but the holiday meant no one was available. The next day, I tried to transfer Flor to another facility, but then came a surprise: she was now stable—no longer an emergency case. That meant she would have to wait until Monday for surgery. I was relieved by her stability, but anxious for her to get the help she needed.
When surgery day arrived, the doctors delivered the difficult news: Flor’s left leg couldn’t be saved. They would have to remove it. There were concerns about her right front leg too, but that could only be assessed during surgery. For three long hours, I waited while Flor was on the operating table. She needed a blood transfusion due to blood loss, but through it all, Flor remained calm and brave.
After surgery, Flor came home with me. She had lost a leg, but her spirit was stronger than ever. The best news of all? Her right front leg was saved. While she’ll need a minor procedure in the future, the worst is behind her.
Now, Flor lives with me and Simon, another dog with special needs. Every time I walk into a room, both Flor and Simon follow—limping, hopping, and shuffling along behind me. Their steps may be uneven, but their hearts are full of love. I am so proud to be their rescue mom.
Flor, once nameless and nearly lost, is now a cherished member of our family. She is living proof that love and determination can overcome even the greatest obstacles. This miracle was made possible by people like you—who cared, supported, and believed.
Thank you for standing with Flor. She has done the impossible, and we believe her new life is only just beginning.
