From Despair to Triumph: The Remarkable Rescue and Recovery of Ares the Dog
In front of an unassuming house, a small, emaciated dog was abandoned—left to fend for himself in a world that had shown him little kindness. It was a compassionate woman who first noticed him, taking him in and reaching out to a local rescue group for help. What rescuers found was almost too painful to describe.

Ares, as he would later be named, was in a state far beyond neglect. He was little more than skin and bones, his ribs protruding from hunger, his body covered in scars, mange, and crawling with fleas. His fur had nearly all fallen out, and his spirit seemed crushed under the weight of prolonged abuse. Severely dehydrated, his gums were pale, his hematocrit level was a dangerously low 8, and he weighed only 10 kilograms—a frame of pure bone.
Veterinarians were astounded that he was still alive. His condition was so dire that an emergency blood transfusion was needed just to give him a chance at survival. That first night was tense and chaotic as the team worked tirelessly to stabilize him. Gradually, his appetite returned, and hope began to flicker.
Ares’s recovery was slow and fraught with complications. He suffered from gastric dilation, and there were fears of a potentially fatal stomach twist. X-rays revealed broken ribs that had healed on their own. He required sedation and a tube to relieve the gas buildup. His diet had to be meticulously managed, and for a long time, he could only eat specially prepared food. Early on, he needed to be hand-fed, but as days passed, he slowly regained the strength to eat on his own and eventually to stand and sit independently.
With each small victory, the rescue team celebrated. Ares received medicated baths to treat his mange and responded calmly to the care and attention he was given. The team named him Ares, after the god of war, for his fighting spirit. “Let’s go, Ares. We know you can do it,” they encouraged him, inspired by his tenacity and will to live.
A month passed, and Ares blossomed. His fur began to regrow, his appetite returned, and his tail wagged with joy. He grew curious about life again, engaging with his surroundings and even beginning physical therapy to help him walk. The strength that had pulled him back from the brink now propelled him forward.
Two months after his rescue, Ares was ready to leave the clinic. The promise made to him—that he would walk out on his own—was fulfilled. He left behind the pain of his past, stepping into a new life with a loving family who cherished him. “My parents spoil me,” Ares “wrote” from his new home, “They bathe me, put lotion on me, prepare tasty meals, take me for walks, and buy me comfortable clothes. They are everything good, and they give me everything and more.”
Now about five years old, Ares continues to thrive. His new family takes him for regular checkups, ensuring he remains healthy and happy. Sadly, his previous abuser was never identified, but Ares has left that chapter behind. He has reclaimed his dignity and is living the life he always deserved.
Ares’s story is not just one of survival, but of the transformative power of compassion, resilience, and hope. Through the dedication of his rescuers and the love of his new family, Ares has become a symbol of what’s possible when we refuse to give up on those who need us most.
