Bills RB James Cook Expected to Practice Amid Contract Talks, Says Coach Sean McDermott: “He’s Ready to Go”

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott confirmed Thursday morning that running back James Cook, who is currently seeking a new contract extension, is expected to participate in practice despite ongoing negotiations.

Speaking with reporters ahead of the team’s first full training camp session, McDermott offered a confident update on Cook’s status.

“He’s ready to go,” McDermott said. “James has been working hard all offseason, and I anticipate him practicing today.”

Cook’s participation is a welcome sign for the Bills organization, which is aiming to maintain continuity in its offensive backfield heading into a pivotal 2025 campaign. The 24-year-old back is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is reportedly seeking an extension that reflects his growing role as a feature back.

Last season, Cook broke out as one of the AFC’s most efficient runners, finishing with 1,182 rushing yards, 9 total touchdowns, and 42 receptions for 328 receiving yards. His dynamic playmaking ability helped alleviate pressure on quarterback Josh Allen and gave Buffalo one of the most balanced offenses in the conference.

Despite his rising value, Cook has not held out of offseason activities. He attended mandatory minicamp and has remained active in team meetings and workouts. However, his camp has made it known that they are hoping to reach a deal before Week 1.

Sources close to the situation say talks between Cook’s representatives and the Bills front office have been “constructive” but no deal is imminent. The team appears optimistic that a resolution can be reached without drama.

“We value James and everything he brings to this team, both on and off the field,” said Bills GM Brandon Beane earlier this month. “He’s earned the right to be in that conversation, and we’ll continue working through it.”

Cook declined to speak with reporters before practice but appeared in good spirits as he arrived at the facility early Thursday. Teammates also expressed confidence that the situation wouldn’t be a distraction.

“He’s locked in,” said wide receiver Stefon Diggs. “Whatever is going on behind the scenes, he’s here to work. That’s just who he is.”

The Bills’ decision to let veteran back Latavius Murray walk in free agency further emphasized their trust in Cook to be the lead back. The team did add depth through the draft and minor signings, but Cook is expected to carry the majority of the workload in 2025.

Buffalo opens its preseason schedule on August 9 against the Chicago Bears, and all signs point to Cook being a full participant leading up to that game—barring any new developments in contract talks.

As the Bills look to make another deep postseason run, having Cook healthy, focused, and eventually secured long-term will be critical to their championship aspirations.
