Brittney Griner SLAMS Adam Silver After SHOCKING WNBA Exit!
In a stunning turn of events, WNBA star Brittney Griner has announced her departure from the league — and she’s not leaving quietly.
Griner, a longtime face of women’s basketball and a vocal advocate for social justice, publicly criticized NBA Commissioner Adam Silver following her exit, accusing the league’s leadership of failing to support WNBA players adequately and calling out what she described as years of neglect, double standards, and financial inequality.
In a fiery post on her social media accounts, Griner wrote:
“We gave everything to this league, and all we got in return was silence, empty promises, and second-class treatment. Adam Silver has had years to fix this — and he chose not to.”
Though Silver is not directly in charge of the WNBA (which is led by Commissioner Cathy Engelbert), many fans and players believe the NBA’s influence — and funding — over the WNBA has long been understated and underused. Griner’s statement reignited debates about the NBA’s responsibility to invest more heavily in the women’s game.
Her comments came just hours after she confirmed she would be stepping away from professional basketball “indefinitely,” citing both personal and professional frustrations.
Griner’s exit comes amid a season full of headlines for the WNBA — with surging viewership, a rise in media attention thanks to stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, and record-breaking attendance numbers. Yet behind the scenes, many players have continued to voice concerns over pay disparity, travel conditions, and lack of long-term league support.
Social media lit up in support of Griner, with several fellow players reposting her comments and using hashtags like #StandWithBG and #WNBADeservesMore. Others, however, questioned her timing, noting the league’s recent growth and suggesting her move could cause unnecessary division during a critical moment for women’s sports.
As of now, the NBA has not issued an official response to Griner’s remarks. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert briefly addressed the situation in a press conference, saying: “We respect Brittney’s decision and appreciate everything she has contributed to the league. Her voice is important, and we’re listening.”
Whether Griner’s departure is temporary or permanent remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: her exit has ignited a firestorm of conversation that could shape the future of the WNBA for years to come.
