Backlash Erupts After Jesse Watters Joins LeBron James Interview on Fox News
Fox News is facing fierce criticism following its decision to allow conservative commentator Jesse Watters to participate in a high-profile interview with NBA superstar LeBron James. The interview, which aired on the network’s primetime program Sunday evening, was intended to highlight James’ career achievements and his growing impact as a philanthropist and businessman. However, the segment quickly drew backlash after Watters asked a series of pointed and, according to many viewers, offensive questions.

LeBron James, one of the most influential athletes of his generation, appeared on the program to discuss his recent retirement plans, his I PROMISE School initiative, and his investment ventures aimed at uplifting Black communities. Instead of focusing solely on James’ accomplishments, Watters shifted the tone of the interview with questions that many interpreted as disrespectful, racially charged, and politically motivated.
At one point, Watters asked James whether his outspokenness on social justice issues had “alienated half of America,” and suggested that athletes should “stick to sports.” He also pressed James on his criticism of law enforcement in the past, and questioned whether James was “too political for someone with a sports platform.”
The interview immediately sparked outrage on social media. The hashtag #LetLeBronSpeak trended on X (formerly Twitter) within an hour of the segment airing. Fans, celebrities, and activists accused Fox News of intentionally creating a hostile environment for James and using Watters to undermine the conversation.
“Fox News invited LeBron James on to talk about his legacy, and then used Jesse Watters to derail the conversation with inflammatory, divisive questions,” wrote one user. “It was not journalism. It was provocation.”
Longtime sports journalist Taylor Rooks also weighed in, tweeting: “You don’t bring LeBron James into a space and then challenge his right to speak on issues that directly affect him and the communities he serves. That’s not an interview. That’s an ambush.”

This isn’t the first time Jesse Watters has come under fire for his interview tactics. He has a well-documented history of making racially insensitive comments and conducting controversial segments. Critics argue that Fox News was well aware of Watters’ reputation and chose to include him in the segment knowing it could spark outrage and boost ratings.
“It was a calculated move,” said Dr. Maya Henderson, a professor of media ethics at Columbia University. “Fox News wanted the attention that would come from putting a polarizing figure like Watters across from someone as respected and outspoken as LeBron James. Unfortunately, the result was a complete failure to engage in a meaningful conversation.”
Fox News defended its decision in a brief statement Monday, claiming the network is “committed to fair and balanced discussions” and values “a range of perspectives.” The network did not directly address the criticism surrounding Watters’ line of questioning.
LeBron James has not publicly commented on the controversy, though sources close to the athlete said he was “frustrated” by the confrontational tone but chose to stay composed and focused on the issues he cares about.
The interview has reignited broader conversations about how mainstream media platforms handle interviews with Black public figures — and whether those interviews are conducted with the respect and nuance they deserve.
“LeBron James has earned the right to be heard, not interrogated,” said Brittany Packnett Cunningham, a social justice advocate. “What we saw last night was not a celebration of his legacy. It was an attempt to discredit it.”
As public pressure continues to mount, viewers are calling for Fox News to issue an apology and reconsider its approach to high-profile interviews. Whether the network responds remains to be seen, but for many, the damage has already been done.
“LeBron didn’t owe them that interview,” one viewer posted. “And now they owe him an apology.”
