Blake Lively Sues Perez Hilton for Defamation Over “Targeted Smear Campaign” Linked to Justin Baldoni Dispute
Hollywood actress Blake Lively has filed a high-profile defamation lawsuit against celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, alleging that he published over 500 defamatory posts and videos targeting her in connection with an ongoing dispute involving actor and producer Justin Baldoni.
Filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the lawsuit accuses Hilton of launching a systematic smear campaign that included derogatory nicknames such as “Blackface Blake” and “Lying Lively,” while failing to seek comment or verification from Lively or her representatives. According to the complaint, the content in question spanned multiple platforms, including Hilton’s website, YouTube channel, and various social media accounts.
“Mr. Hilton did not act as a journalist. He acted as a mouthpiece for a malicious campaign designed to destroy Ms. Lively’s reputation,” the filing reads. “The repetitive, unverified, and inflammatory nature of these posts suggests deliberate intent—not careless reporting.”
Alleged Link to Justin Baldoni and His Production Company
In a shocking development, Lively’s legal team further claims that Hilton may not have acted alone. The lawsuit alleges that the smear campaign could be part of a coordinated effort involving Baldoni and his production company, with whom Lively has been engaged in a confidential legal dispute over a failed film deal.
While the exact nature of the dispute between Lively and Baldoni remains sealed under a separate legal agreement, the lawsuit argues that Hilton’s coverage—particularly his focus on Lively’s alleged “dishonesty” and “racial insensitivity”—mirrored accusations raised in that private conflict.
“This is not random gossip,” Lively said in a brief statement. “This is targeted character assassination.”
Lively’s attorneys are now requesting that the court compel Hilton to turn over all communications between himself and any parties affiliated with Baldoni, arguing that such material could prove collusion.
Perez Hilton Responds
Perez Hilton, long known for his provocative commentary on celebrity culture, has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that his posts were based on publicly available information and protected under the First Amendment.
“I stand by my work,” Hilton said in a statement issued through his attorney. “I reported on public controversies involving a public figure. That is not defamation—it’s journalism.”
He further characterized Lively’s lawsuit as an attempt to “silence criticism and distract from legitimate questions” raised by her professional conduct.
Legal and Public Fallout
The case is already sparking widespread debate over the boundaries between celebrity reporting and defamation, particularly in an era of viral content and blurred lines between news and entertainment. Legal experts suggest that the case could set important precedents regarding accountability in influencer media and the scope of journalistic protections for independent bloggers.
“If Hilton was indeed working with a third party to damage Lively’s reputation, that’s a very serious allegation,” said legal analyst Dr. Karen Fields. “But even without that, the volume and tone of the content could make this case different from typical defamation suits.”
