Jets QB Justin Fields Suffers Dislocated Toe, Listed Day-to-Day
In a concerning development for the New York Jets, quarterback Justin Fields has sustained a dislocated toe in his right foot, the team announced Wednesday morning. The injury occurred during Tuesday’s practice session, and while initial tests show no fractures or major ligament damage, Fields’ availability for the upcoming training sessions and preseason games is now considered “day-to-day.”
The injury was reportedly sustained during a non-contact drill when Fields planted awkwardly on a rollout pass. Team trainers immediately examined the quarterback on the field before helping him to the sideline. Though he walked under his own power, there was noticeable discomfort, and he did not return to practice for the remainder of the day.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh addressed the media shortly after the announcement. “It’s a dislocated toe on his right foot, and thankfully nothing more severe,” Saleh said. “We’ll monitor his progress closely. Right now, we’re taking it day-by-day, and we’ll see how he responds to treatment and rehab.”
Fields, who joined the Jets earlier this year after a high-profile trade from the Chicago Bears, has been competing for the starting quarterback role heading into the 2025 season. His performance in offseason workouts and early training camp had generated excitement among fans and analysts alike, who were eager to see if a change of scenery could unlock the full potential of the former Ohio State standout.

The injury, while not expected to be long-term, raises concerns about the timing and momentum Fields had been building. “It’s frustrating for sure,” said one teammate who asked not to be named. “Justin’s been locked in and showing real leadership. But he’s tough, and we know he’ll bounce back.”
Toe injuries, particularly to the plant foot for quarterbacks, can be tricky to manage. While Fields avoided the more severe “turf toe” diagnosis that can sideline players for weeks or even months, the Jets medical staff will need to be cautious to avoid any setbacks or complications.
Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor took over first-team reps following Fields’ exit and is expected to continue doing so for the time being. The Jets also have rookie quarterback Malik Rhodes in the mix, but the coaching staff has been vocal about wanting Fields to take control of the offense this season.
Fans reacted with mixed emotions across social media—relieved that the injury wasn’t season-threatening but anxious about the lingering effects it might have. “As long as it’s not broken or torn, we’re okay,” one fan tweeted. “Get well soon, Justin. We need you this year!”
For now, all eyes are on the recovery timeline. Fields is expected to undergo further evaluation later this week. The Jets open their preseason in two weeks against the Detroit Lions, and while Fields’ status for that game remains uncertain, the team remains cautiously optimistic.
As the 2025 season approaches, the Jets are hoping this setback is only temporary—for a quarterback they believe could be the franchise’s long-awaited answer under center.
