Julia Garner Warns Fans About Weapons: “Get Ready for a Lot of Jump Scares!

Emmy-winning actress Julia Garner — best known for her iconic roles in Ozark and Inventing Anna — recently stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about her brand-new horror film, Weapons.

Even after just watching a short preview clip, Colbert admitted he was already “freaked out.” Julia quickly jumped in with a warning to audiences everywhere:

“Get ready. This movie has a lot of jump scares.”

From a Family of Teachers to Playing One on Screen

In Weapons, Julia takes on the role of a school teacher, something she says felt natural given her family background. “My dad was a teacher, my sister is a teacher — a lot of my family are teachers,” Julia explained. Her sister even handed her a “teacher lanyard checklist” to help her embody the character properly.

Working With Josh Brolin

One of the big draws of Weapons is Julia’s on-screen partnership with Josh Brolin. She admitted to being nervous at first, calling him one of her favorite actors. But it didn’t take long before the two were laughing constantly on set.

“He’s really one of a kind, a true limited edition,” Julia said with a smile.

During the interview, Julia even revealed a personal video message Brolin had recorded for Colbert, where he joked:

“Be nice to our girl. She’s really good in this movie. And also… go watch The Goonies, man!”

Becoming the Silver Surfer — Without Surfing

Beyond Weapons, Garner is also stepping into the Marvel universe, portraying the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: First Steps. To prepare, she took surfing lessons — despite admitting she’s terrified of the ocean and even allergic to the sun.

“It’s basically a mix of surfing and dance moves,” she laughed. “Marvel surfing, whatever that means.”

Easily Spooked, Just Like the Audience

When Colbert asked if she enjoys scary movies, Julia responded with her usual candor:

“I have anxiety every day, so yes — I get scared easily.”

That led Colbert to joke that he might need to wear a neck brace just to survive all the jump scares in her film.
