Keanu Reeves Opens Up About the Challenges of Filming Good Fortune
While audiences are eagerly awaiting the release of Good Fortune, the upcoming comedy directed by Aziz Ansari, Keanu Reeves has offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at the challenges he faced while making the film. Known for his stoic presence and effortless cool in action films like John Wick and The Matrix, Reeves takes a sharp comedic turn in Good Fortune, playing a quirky and underqualified guardian angel named Gabriel. But, as Reeves revealed, stepping into this role was far from easy.
Stepping Outside His Comfort Zone
In a recent interview promoting the film, Keanu admitted that embracing a more lighthearted, absurd character took some adjustment. “This was a very different kind of role for me,” he said. “Gabriel is awkward, confused, and kind of terrible at his job—but he means well. Playing someone so clueless and comedic was both fun and a little intimidating.”
He added, “I’ve done comedy before, but this was on a whole new level. Aziz has a very specific tone and vision—it’s satirical, sharp, and sweet at the same time. Finding the balance between those elements took time.”
Physical Comedy and… Tiny Wings?
Reeves also mentioned that the film’s physical elements posed their own set of challenges—particularly the wings. Gabriel, his character, sports a set of intentionally unimpressive, small angel wings. “They looked hilarious, but man, they were not easy to work with,” he laughed. “They bumped into everything—doorways, furniture, even people on set. There were moments where I’d try to deliver a line seriously and just knock something over with a wing. That kind of became part of Gabriel’s charm, I think.”
Long Hours, Big Laughs
Like many film productions, Good Fortune came with its own hectic schedule. Filming took place across several Los Angeles neighborhoods, with many scenes requiring late-night shoots and fast turnarounds. Reeves noted the demands of switching quickly between comedy and emotion, particularly during the film’s more grounded moments.
“There’s a lot of humor in this movie,” he said, “but there are also scenes that deal with loneliness, purpose, and the feeling of not fitting in. As ridiculous as Gabriel is, he’s also kind of lost—and that’s something I could connect to.”
A Rewarding Experience
Despite the difficulties, Keanu emphasized how fulfilling the experience was. Working with Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen, and Sandra Oh brought a fresh creative energy to the set. “Aziz is such a generous director. He knows what he wants, but he also gives you space to try things. That kind of environment doesn’t happen on every project.”
Reeves also praised the film’s message. “Good Fortune might be a comedy, but it asks important questions—about empathy, inequality, and what it really means to live a good life.”
Looking Ahead
With Good Fortune set to premiere this fall, Keanu Reeves hopes audiences will embrace its offbeat charm—and maybe even see a new side of him. “This movie was a challenge,” he said, “but it was one I’m really grateful for. Sometimes, the hardest roles are the ones that help you grow the most.”
