Late-Night Solidarity: Colbert’s Peers Show Up in Force After The Late Show Cancellation
In a powerful and emotional show of late-night solidarity, several of Stephen Colbert’s closest friends and fellow hosts made surprise appearances this week to support him following the stunning announcement that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be canceled in May 2026.
CBS confirmed earlier this month that it would sunset The Late Show franchise after over three decades on the air, citing financial losses and evolving viewership habits. Colbert, who has hosted the program since 2015 and helped reestablish it as a ratings leader, made the announcement during a heartfelt monologue, emphasizing that the decision was “not his” and calling the ending “bittersweet.”
While fans continue to mourn the upcoming loss of one of late night’s most beloved programs, Colbert’s peers weren’t about to let the moment pass quietly.
In a surprise segment that aired Tuesday night, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, and John Oliver all joined Colbert live on set, walking out one by one to the sound of thunderous applause. The moment, unannounced and unscripted, was met with visible emotion from Colbert, who joked, “I didn’t know I was getting a wake before the funeral.”
Kimmel, the first to speak, quipped, “When one of us goes, we all show up—whether it’s for a roast or a revolt.” Fallon added, “We may compete for timeslots, but we’re all part of the same late-night family.”
Seth Meyers offered a more sincere reflection, saying, “Stephen raised the bar for political comedy, for integrity, and for humanity. Losing this show is more than just a programming change—it’s the end of a voice that stood for something.”
John Oliver, never one to mince words, turned serious. “You fought for facts and decency at a time when those things were under siege. Whatever CBS says, this isn’t just a budget cut. It’s a cultural loss.”
While the moment was celebratory in tone, there was an undercurrent of frustration. Insiders say Colbert’s departure may not be purely financial. His vocal criticism of CBS and Paramount’s handling of political donations and recent corporate mergers, including on-air jabs about their settlement with Donald Trump, sparked speculation that internal pressure may have played a role.
Colbert, for his part, remained graceful. “I’ve loved every moment of this ride. I’m sad it’s ending, but I’m grateful it ever began.”
The support didn’t end with the surprise segment. On social media, fellow celebrities like Ben Stiller, Rachel Zegler, and Adam Scott offered messages of appreciation and disbelief. Even former Late Show host David Letterman criticized CBS executives as “gutless” in a scathing editorial, defending Colbert as a “vital voice in a reckless time.”
As the countdown to the final show begins, Colbert has teased potential new creative ventures, including podcasting and writing. For now, fans and colleagues alike are savoring the remaining months of a host who redefined late-night television with intellect, wit, and heart.
