Mass Shooting at Manhattan Office Tower Leaves 4 Dead, Suspect Linked to NFL Grievance
New York City, July 29, 2025 — A tragic mass shooting unfolded Monday morning at a high-rise office building at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan, leaving four people dead and several others injured. Authorities have identified the suspect as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, who appeared to target the National Football League (NFL) headquarters located within the building.
Timeline of the Attack
At approximately 8:00 AM on July 28, Tamura entered the 40-story building carrying an M4-style rifle, a handgun, and over 100 rounds of ammunition. He opened fire in the building’s lobby, apparently after getting off on the wrong floor — just two stories below the NFL’s office suite.
Victims of the attack include:
Aland Etienne, 35, a security guard who confronted the gunman and was hailed as a hero.
Didarul Islam, an off-duty police officer working security, who was fatally shot while assisting civilians.
Wesley LePatner, a senior executive at investment giant Blackstone.
A 27-year-old woman whose name has not been released.
At least one NFL employee was also wounded but is currently in stable condition.
Shooter’s Motive: A Grudge Against the NFL
Investigators recovered a handwritten note from Tamura expressing deep resentment toward the NFL, claiming the league downplays the long-term brain injuries caused by professional football. Tamura, who described himself as a former amateur football player, believed he was suffering from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) — a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma.
In his letter, Tamura accused the league of “knowingly destroying lives for profit” and referred to the NFL headquarters as “a den of lies.” Police believe he intended to target league executives directly but became disoriented in the building.
Public and Political Response
The attack has rocked New York City. Mayor Eric Adams condemned the shooting as “an act of domestic terror” and announced heightened security across major commercial buildings in Manhattan.
The incident has reignited the national debate on gun control. Republican Senator John Kennedy drew criticism for saying, “We don’t need gun control; we need idiot control.” In contrast, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the shooting “a national epidemic” and renewed calls for stricter background checks and assault weapons bans.
Mental Health and Accountability in Sports
Beyond the gun violence angle, the shooting has raised concerns about the mental health crisis among former athletes. Experts say that unaddressed trauma and lack of support systems may contribute to tragic outcomes. While the NFL has pledged to increase research into CTE, critics argue that its efforts remain insufficient.
Ongoing Investigation
Tamura was shot and killed by NYPD officers shortly after the attack began. Authorities continue to search his digital footprint and interview acquaintances to determine whether others were involved or aware of his plan.
As flowers and candles pile up outside 345 Park Avenue, the city mourns yet another senseless act of violence — one that unfolded at the heart of America’s financial and sports power structures.
