Rebel Wilson Faces Potential Lawsuit Over Allegedly False Misconduct Claims

 Australian actress and filmmaker Rebel Wilson is facing potential legal action after being served a formal legal notice by actress Charlotte MacInnes, star of Wilson’s directorial debut The Deb. The dispute centers around allegedly false and damaging claims made by Wilson regarding sexual misconduct and changes in MacInnes’ testimony.

According to legal documents filed earlier this month, MacInnes has issued a concerns notice — a formal step under Australian defamation law — accusing Wilson of defaming her by suggesting, in public social media posts and interviews, that she was a victim of sexual harassment during the film’s production, but later altered her account after receiving professional opportunities, including a record deal.

MacInnes has firmly denied these claims, labeling them “false, defamatory, and seriously damaging” to her personal and professional reputation. The young actress emphasized that Wilson’s public statements have caused significant distress and potential long-term harm to her rising career in the entertainment industry.

In accordance with Australian defamation law, Wilson now has 28 days to formally retract her statements and issue a public apology. Failure to comply could lead to a full-scale defamation lawsuit being filed in the New South Wales Supreme Court.

In a brief statement through her legal team, MacInnes said:

“The allegations made against me are categorically untrue. I have never altered any testimony nor have I acted in bad faith. These claims have done real damage to my reputation, and I am pursuing appropriate legal remedies to restore the truth.”

This legal notice adds to Wilson’s growing list of legal troubles related to The Deb. In the United States, Wilson is already being sued by producers of the film — Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron, and Vince Holden — who allege that she made false and damaging claims about misconduct and financial mismanagement during production. Wilson attempted to dismiss that lawsuit under California’s anti-SLAPP laws but lost a preliminary ruling earlier this year.

In Australia, Wilson is also being sued by AI Film, a major production company behind The Deb, which alleges that her public comments and refusal to promote the film have sabotaged its distribution and commercial prospects.

Despite the controversy, Wilson has continued to defend her actions, framing them as efforts to “expose uncomfortable truths within the industry.” However, critics argue that using sensitive allegations — particularly without the consent of those involved — risks causing more harm than good.

Legal analysts suggest that if MacInnes proceeds with a defamation lawsuit and succeeds, Wilson could face significant financial and reputational consequences. The case could also set a precedent for how public figures discuss sensitive issues such as harassment and misconduct in the media.
