Search Continues for Brown University Gunman as Police Release New Video of Suspect
Providence, Rhode Island — Authorities are continuing an intensive manhunt for the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting at Brown University, as police on Monday released new video footage of the suspect in hopes of generating fresh leads. The attack, which left two students dead and nine others injured, has shaken the Ivy League campus and sparked renewed concerns about campus safety nationwide.
The shooting occurred Saturday afternoon inside an academic building on Brown’s campus, where the gunman allegedly opened fire in a crowded area during finals weekend. Chaos erupted as students and faculty fled the scene, while campus police and local law enforcement rushed in to secure the area. A shelter-in-place order was issued and remained in effect for several hours as officers searched nearby buildings and surrounding neighborhoods.

On Monday, Providence police released surveillance footage showing a person of interest walking away from the scene shortly after the shooting. The video, while clearer than previous images, does not reveal the suspect’s face. The individual is seen wearing dark clothing and carrying a backpack, details investigators hope will help the public identify him. Police urged anyone who recognizes the person or has additional video footage to come forward immediately.
Authorities also confirmed that a man who had been detained earlier as a person of interest was released after investigators determined there was insufficient evidence linking him to the crime. Officials stressed that the release does not mean the case has gone cold, emphasizing that the suspect remains at large and the investigation is ongoing.
“This is a complex and active investigation,” the Rhode Island Attorney General said at a press briefing. “We are pursuing multiple leads, reviewing hours of surveillance footage, and working closely with federal partners to locate the individual responsible.”

The FBI has joined the search, offering additional resources and forensic support. Law enforcement agencies are canvassing nearby businesses and residences for security camera footage that could show the suspect before or after the shooting. Police have not disclosed a motive and have not said whether the victims were specifically targeted.
Brown University officials described the attack as a devastating tragedy for the campus community. Classes and final exams were canceled for the remainder of the term, and grief counselors have been made available to students, faculty, and staff. Vigils have been held across campus as mourners gathered to honor the victims and support one another.
Providence city leaders urged calm while acknowledging the fear and anger felt by residents. “We understand how unsettling this is,” the mayor said. “Our priority is bringing the person responsible to justice and ensuring the safety of our community.”
As the search continues, authorities reiterated their appeal to the public for help. Anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, is urged to contact Providence police or the FBI. Investigators say public cooperation could prove critical in identifying the suspect and preventing further violence.
