Serena Williams Teams Up with Netflix for Upcoming Biopic: “My Story, My Voice”

Tennis icon and global cultural figure Serena Williams is set to bring her remarkable life story to the screen in a groundbreaking new project with Netflix. The streaming giant has officially confirmed a feature-length biopic based on Williams’ life and legacy, with Serena herself serving as executive producer and creative consultant.

Titled “My Story, My Voice: The Serena Williams Journey”, the film will trace her evolution from a determined young girl in Compton, California to becoming one of the most dominant and transformative athletes in the history of sport — and a powerful voice for women, mothers, and marginalized communities worldwide.

“This isn’t just a tennis story,” Williams said during a live announcement at the Netflix Forward 2025 event. “It’s about perseverance. It’s about being underestimated and pushing through. And more than anything, it’s about owning your narrative before someone else writes it for you.”

A First Look

As part of the announcement, Netflix dropped a teaser trailer — a 45-second preview that left fans buzzing. The clip opens with a young Serena running through cracked sidewalks in Compton, tennis racket in hand, narrated by her own voice:

“They told me I was too loud. Too bold. Too strong. I listened — and then I became all those things louder.”

The teaser offers glimpses of key milestones: her first Grand Slam win at age 17, her comeback after giving birth, her losses, triumphs, and signature on-court intensity. The film will also explore her off-court battles — dealing with racism in sport, her advocacy for maternal health, and her rise as an entrepreneur, fashion icon, and mother.

Behind the Scenes

The film is being directed by Ava DuVernay, known for her powerful storytelling in projects like Selma and When They See Us. DuVernay, who has worked closely with Williams for over a year, described the project as “a raw and unapologetic portrait of power, vulnerability, and the cost of greatness.”

The casting has yet to be fully revealed, but Netflix has confirmed that Serena will narrate parts of the film herself and that the production will include never-before-seen family footage, as well as dramatized scenes.

A Legacy in Motion

This marks Williams’ latest foray into film and television. After retiring from professional tennis in 2022, she launched her own production company, Nine Two Six Productions, with a mission to amplify underrepresented voices — particularly women of color.

“I’ve had cameras on me my entire life,” she said, “but this is the first time I’m choosing the lens.”

Coming Soon

“My Story, My Voice” is expected to premiere exclusively on Netflix in Spring 2026, with a global release and accompanying limited theatrical run.

Fans around the world are already calling it one of the most anticipated sports biopics in recent memory.
