“She Stole the Money” — BLM Leader Indicted in Alleged $3 Million Fraud Involving Protester Bail Funds
A prominent leader associated with the Black Lives Matter movement has been indicted on multiple federal charges stemming from an alleged scheme to misuse millions of dollars raised to support protesters, according to court documents unsealed this week. Prosecutors allege that approximately $3 million in donations intended for bail funds and legal support were instead diverted for personal use.
The indictment accuses the activist, who held a senior leadership role within a local BLM-affiliated organization, of wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy. Federal authorities claim donors were misled into believing their contributions would be used to post bail for arrested protesters during periods of civil unrest, while a significant portion of the funds was allegedly redirected to personal accounts and unauthorized expenses.
“This case is about deception and betrayal of trust,” a prosecutor said during a court appearance. “People donated in good faith to support civil rights causes, and instead, their money was allegedly used for private benefit.”

According to the charging documents, the accused used the funds to finance luxury purchases, travel, and real estate transactions. Investigators say the alleged scheme spanned several years and involved complex financial transfers designed to conceal the origin and use of the money.
The case has drawn national attention due to the visibility of the Black Lives Matter movement and the sensitive nature of fundraising tied to social justice protests. Bail funds, in particular, became a focal point during nationwide demonstrations, with supporters donating millions to help protesters secure release from jail and access legal representation.
Defense attorneys for the accused strongly denied the allegations, calling them “politically motivated” and “deeply misleading.” In a statement, the legal team emphasized that an indictment is not a conviction and vowed to fight the charges in court.
“Our client has not stolen anything,” the statement said. “All funds were used in accordance with organizational guidelines and lawful purposes.”
Supporters of the accused echoed that sentiment, warning against conflating the alleged actions of one individual with the broader movement. They argued that the indictment could be used to discredit legitimate activism and discourage future donations to civil rights organizations.
Critics, however, say the case highlights the need for greater transparency and oversight within nonprofit and activist organizations. Some donors expressed anger and disappointment, saying they contributed believing their money would directly help protesters facing legal jeopardy.
“I donated because I wanted to help people get out of jail,” one donor said. “If these allegations are true, it’s a complete betrayal.”
Legal experts note that the case could have far-reaching implications, not only for the defendant but also for how activist groups manage and report funds. If convicted, the accused could face significant prison time and financial penalties, including restitution to donors.
The indictment marks the beginning of what is expected to be a lengthy legal process. A court date has been scheduled, and prosecutors indicated that additional evidence may be presented as the case moves forward.
As the investigation continues, the case has intensified debate over accountability, trust, and financial integrity within high-profile social movements — underscoring the legal risks that come with managing millions of dollars in public donations.
