Traffic Responder Killed After Being Struck by Semi While Clearing Vehicle Fire on Florida Highway

A roadside traffic responder was killed after being struck by a semi-truck while working to clear a vehicle fire on a Florida highway, highlighting once again the extreme dangers faced by emergency and traffic workers on busy roadways.

The fatal incident occurred on Interstate 95 in Brevard County as the responder and a coworker were assisting with an earlier crash involving a vehicle fire. Authorities said the crew had positioned their maintenance truck with flashing lights and an arrow board to warn approaching drivers and divert traffic away from the scene. Cones and other safety measures were also in place as the responders worked to secure the area and prevent further danger.

Despite these precautions, a semi-truck traveling in the same direction failed to slow down or move over and crashed into the rear of the traffic response vehicle. The impact was severe, forcing both vehicles into the guardrail. The responder driving the maintenance truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second responder riding in the truck suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The semi-truck driver was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
