Wendy Williams’ New Medical Evaluation Completed as Guardian Seeks to Extend Legal Control

Television personality Wendy Williams is once again making headlines as her court-appointed guardian has formally requested an extension of her guardianship following a new medical evaluation. The move comes amid ongoing controversy, legal battles, and public debate surrounding Williams’ mental health and personal freedom.

Sabrina Morrissey, Williams’ guardian since May 2022, recently submitted documents to the New York court confirming that a comprehensive medical evaluation had been completed. According to reports, the evaluation included neurological testing, brain scans, and assessments of Williams’ cognitive and decision-making abilities.

The results, reviewed by multiple experts, reaffirmed Williams’ 2023 diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia — two conditions that can severely affect judgment, memory, and communication. Based on the findings, Morrissey is asking the court to extend the guardianship until at least November 5, 2025.

“The evaluation supports that Ms. Williams continues to lack the capacity to manage her personal and financial affairs,” court documents state.’

A Deepening Legal Dispute

The guardianship, which originally shocked fans and supporters, has remained a source of tension and conflict — both within Williams’ family and the wider public. Williams, 61, has repeatedly expressed a desire to regain her independence. In several interviews, including one earlier this year, she described the guardianship as “dehumanizing” and “unnecessary,” claiming she had “passed all her psychological tests with flying colors.”

Her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, has also taken legal action against the guardianship. In a separate lawsuit, Hunter accuses the current guardianship team of financial mismanagement and abuse of power, seeking $250 million in damages and a full audit. He also claims that the original proceedings to place Williams under guardianship were conducted without transparency or proper legal counsel.

Williams’ son and other close relatives have voiced similar concerns, with several alleging that Wendy has been kept isolated and that her wishes are not being honored.

Conflicting Narratives

Despite the family’s accusations and Wendy’s own statements, the latest medical evaluation presents a different picture. The court-appointed medical experts concluded that Williams is not currently capable of managing her affairs independently, especially with regard to complex financial matters and healthcare decisions.

This conclusion significantly undermines the argument that she should be released from the guardianship and could delay any efforts toward reinstating her autonomy.

On the other hand, advocates for Williams argue that guardianships—especially for high-profile individuals—should be carefully reviewed and regularly reassessed to prevent abuse and prolonged legal control over someone’s life.

What Happens Next?

The court is expected to make a ruling on the guardianship extension in the coming weeks. If granted, Morrissey will retain control over Williams’ personal, medical, and financial decisions through at least early November.

In the meantime, public interest in Wendy Williams’ story continues to grow. Many fans are expressing both sympathy for her health struggles and concern over the potential misuse of guardianship laws.

Whether the latest medical findings will finally bring clarity — or just more questions — remains to be seen.
