WNBA $100M Rumor Debunked — But Caitlin Clark’s Influence Is Still Changing the League
In recent days, social media exploded with viral headlines claiming that the WNBA had made a massive, last-minute $100 million offer to keep superstars Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham from leaving the league. The rumor spread like wildfire—but there’s just one problem: there’s no truth to it.
Despite the sensational claims, no credible news outlet or league official has confirmed the existence of any such offer. Both Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham remain under contract with the Indiana Fever, and neither has publicly or privately indicated any intention to leave the WNBA.
Caitlin Clark, in particular, has been at the center of the speculation. Her rookie season has been nothing short of historic—setting viewership records, drawing sellout crowds in nearly every arena, and catapulting the Indiana Fever into the national spotlight. Her impact on the league’s popularity and finances has been dubbed the “Caitlin Clark Effect,” with some analysts estimating she’s responsible for generating over 25% of the league’s revenue in the 2024–2025 season.
Given her meteoric rise, it’s no surprise that alternative leagues tried to lure her away. Clark reportedly turned down a $10 million offer from Ice Cube’s BIG3 league, and also declined a $1 million salary from the Unrivaled 3-on-3 women’s basketball league. Yet, through it all, she has remained loyal to the WNBA and committed to building her legacy within the league.
“I feel very thankful. I wouldn’t change anything for the world,” Clark wrote in a recent message to fans, before adding, “See you all in year two.” That simple but powerful message put to rest much of the talk surrounding her future.
As for Sophie Cunningham, the rumors make even less sense. She was recently traded to the Indiana Fever as part of a major four-team deal and has quickly become an important part of the roster. There’s been no indication from Cunningham or her camp that she’s unhappy or looking to leave.
So where did the $100 million rumor come from?
Most likely, it was fueled by a mix of Clark’s undeniable value and frustration from fans over the current WNBA pay structure. While players like Clark are generating tens of millions in value for the league, their official salaries remain relatively modest—Clark is expected to earn around $85,000 in 2025. The stark contrast between her economic impact and her paycheck has reignited debates over player compensation.
Still, no official “mega-offer” has been made, and Clark herself has shown no signs of dissatisfaction. With massive endorsement deals from Nike, Gatorade, State Farm, and others already in place, she has carved out a lucrative path without needing to leave the WNBA.
In short, the $100 million story is fiction. But Caitlin Clark’s impact? That’s very real—and it’s only just beginning.
