WNBA Offers CBA EXTENSION TO PLAYERS ASSOCIATION As They KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD TO SAVE SEASON
In a move that could shape the immediate future of women’s professional basketball, the WNBA has formally offered the Players Association (WNBPA) an extension of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement — a strategic step to avoid potential labor turbulence and ensure the 2026 season tips off without disruption.
League sources say the offer comes amid mounting tension over key economic and travel issues, including charter flights, revenue sharing, and salary structure. With the current CBA allowing both sides to opt out after the 2025 season, the extension proposal represents what one insider described as “a temporary peace treaty” — a way to buy time as negotiations intensify behind the scenes.
“The league’s goal right now is stability,” one executive explained. “The WNBA is growing faster than ever, but so are the demands from players. Everyone understands what’s at stake — no one wants to see a work stoppage.”

The timing of the offer is no coincidence. The 2025 offseason has already been marked by record visibility for players like Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and A’ja Wilson, whose rising star power is driving massive fan engagement and higher TV ratings. The league’s expansion plans — including the highly anticipated Golden State franchise debut — have only heightened the urgency for long-term stability.
WNBPA representatives have not yet issued a formal response, though multiple players have voiced cautious optimism about continued dialogue. “We want what’s best for everyone — the league, the players, and the fans,” said one veteran guard. “But that means addressing real issues, not just delaying them.”
Among the most contentious topics is travel. Players have long pushed for fully chartered flights across the league, citing both safety and health concerns. While Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has expanded charter usage significantly, the WNBPA argues that a permanent, league-wide commitment must be written into the next CBA.
There’s also growing pressure for a larger share of basketball-related income. Currently, WNBA players receive a smaller percentage of league-generated revenue compared to their NBA counterparts, a gap the union hopes to narrow.
Financially, the league has never been stronger. Sponsorship deals with major corporations, record merchandise sales, and viral social media exposure — largely driven by a new generation of stars — have brought the WNBA to a pivotal crossroads. Yet, the same growth fueling excitement is also fueling frustration.
“This is not 2015 anymore,” one agent commented. “These players are household names. The economics of the league have changed — the structure needs to change too.”
For now, the proposed extension serves as a short-term fix. By “kicking the can down the road,” as one analyst put it, the WNBA avoids a potential standoff that could overshadow what’s expected to be a milestone season. But few believe this move solves the deeper issues.
“The extension keeps the lights on,” said a former player turned broadcaster. “But eventually, both sides will have to face the hard questions — about pay, travel, and what real equity in women’s sports looks like.”
Until then, fans can breathe easy knowing the 2026 season remains on track — at least for now. But beneath the surface, the real game is just beginning.
