“The Refs Loved Kobe”: Stephen Jackson’s Funniest Tales From Battling Bryant
Inside the Mind Games, Locker Room Laughs, and Relentless Drive of the Lakers Legend
When you ask NBA veterans about Kobe Bryant, you get stories that are equal parts awe, hilarity, and respect. Stephen Jackson, never one to hold back, has some of the best—revealing not just Kobe’s greatness, but the quirks and moments that made him unforgettable.
Playing Against Kobe: “They Used to Let Him Cheat”
Stephen Jackson recalls the frustration of guarding Kobe during the playoffs as a member of the San Antonio Spurs. “I drive to the basket, get fouled, and they don’t call it,” he laughs. “I’m talking to the ref, and Kobe comes up, says, ‘Stop talking. You gotta pay attention.’ Next thing I know, he pulls up for three—cash.”

It didn’t stop there. Jackson describes Kobe hitting his arm right in front of the referee with no whistle. “I was losing it. I’m arguing with the ref, and Kobe launches another three—nothing but net. Pop had to take me out the game because I couldn’t stop arguing!”
Jackson’s conclusion? “The refs loved Kobe. They let him get away with everything!”
Kobe Off the Court: The Club Story
Most fans never saw Kobe Bryant in a nightclub. But Jackson did—thanks to teammate Matt Barnes. “I get to the club, and I’ve never seen this side of Bean,” Jackson says, using Kobe’s nickname. “He’s got a drink in his hand, talking to his teammates. But here’s the crazy part: In the middle of the club, he’s talking about basketball. No girls, no distractions—just hoops.”

Jackson laughs, “You never saw Kobe out like that. It was good to see him socialize, but even there, he was locked in on the game.”
Kobe vs. Jordan: The Difference When Guarding Legends
When asked about the difference between guarding Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, Jackson is candid. “I was in awe guarding Mike. But I admired Kobe because we were the same age.”
Jackson remembers the McDonald’s All-American Game in high school, where everyone was eating fast food—except Kobe. “He said, ‘I’m not eating that.’ He had a kill list at 13 of all the guys in our class he wanted to take down. I wasn’t thinking like that—I was chasing girls!”
To Jackson, Kobe was the rare star who set out to be great and actually did it. “Jordan is the top, but Kobe is the closest thing to Mike. I saw him do it from the ground up.”
Admiration and Brotherhood
Jackson’s stories reveal a deeper bond. “I admired Kobe because he was like my brother. We all thought we could make it big, but he actually did it. His dedication was unreal—even as a teenager.”
The Legacy Lives On
From hilarious referee antics to late-night club conversations, Stephen Jackson’s stories remind us why Kobe Bryant remains one of the most fascinating and respected figures in basketball history. His relentless drive, competitive fire, and unique personality left an indelible mark on everyone who crossed his path.
