3,000 EMPTY SEATS! Angel Reese RETURNS! And NOBODY CARED in Chicago! Missed Layups! OH MY!
The much-anticipated return of Angel Reese, Chicago Sky’s star rookie, was expected to electrify Wintrust Arena and fill every seat. Instead, her homecoming game was marked by a surprisingly lackluster turnout, a subdued crowd, and a string of missed opportunities on the court that left fans and analysts puzzled and concerned.
Disappointing Turnout in the Windy City
Despite massive pre-season hype and a strong marketing push touting Reese’s return, over 3,000 seats remained unsold as the Chicago Sky took the court. Wintrust Arena, which has a capacity of around 10,000, looked half-empty even as the opening whistle blew. Many had expected a major boost in attendance thanks to Reese’s college stardom and social media influence, but the visibly empty sections pointed to a disconnect between hype and fan engagement on this particular day.
Local media outlets and fans on social media quickly noticed, with one viewer tweeting: “Where is Chicago tonight? 3,000 empty seats and Angel Reese is back? This is just sad for women’s basketball.”
Angel Reese’s Return Falls Flat
Having missed recent games due to a minor injury, Reese was cleared and back in the starting lineup. Expectations were sky-high, but the forward struggled to find her rhythm. She missed multiple layups early in the first quarter, and those offensive struggles seemed contagious, as her teammates also faltered close to the basket. Reese ended the night with a line well below her average, visibly frustrated but determined to improve.
Following the game, Reese was candid in her remarks: “Nobody wants to play worse in front of our fans, especially after being away. I’ll keep working and make sure next time I step on this court, I make my presence felt for the right reasons.”

Fans Seemingly Unimpressed
While a loyal contingent cheered Reese on every touch, much of the crowd remained subdued, barely reacting even in key moments. Some analysts speculated that the combination of late-game scheduling, rising ticket prices, and the team’s spotty performance led to the poor turnout and tepid atmosphere.
A longtime Sky season ticket holder said: “We love Angel, but tonight felt off — maybe the team just lost its spark, or maybe fans expected too much too soon.”
Missed Layups and Missed Opportunities
The struggle wasn’t just in the stands. On the court, the Sky registered one of their lowest field goal percentages of the season, missing a number of uncontested shots. Turnovers and miscommunications only added to the team’s woes as frustration mounted.
Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon addressed the missed opportunities: “We’ve got to focus and finish. Those missed layups are mental. We know our fans want more, and we’re working to give it to them.”
What’s Next for Angel Reese and the Sky?
It’s clear that one rough night won’t define Angel Reese’s rookie season or the Sky’s campaign. But the combination of empty seats, missed chances, and the curious lack of fan enthusiasm has raised important questions about how the team, and possibly the league, can better capitalize on young stars and translate online excitement to real-world support.
As the Sky regroup for their next matchup, all eyes will be on Reese — to see if she bounces back and if those empty seats start filling up again.
