Chapter 2: Claire’s Plan Turned Madison’s Secret Into A Trap
Chapter 2: Claire’s Plan Turned Madison’s Secret Into A Trap
Madison’s SUV disappeared around the corner.
I stayed on the porch until the taillights were gone.
Only then did I turn toward the dark car parked farther down the street.
Its engine was still running.
My phone buzzed.
Claire:
Come inside. We have twenty minutes.
I stared at the message.
Then another one appeared.
And Daniel, whatever happens tonight, do not contact Madison.
I looked at the road again.
For the first time, I wondered whether I had been too willing to believe that I was simply watching my wife’s secret unfold.
Maybe I wasn’t watching.
Maybe I was already part of it.
I walked back inside, locked the front door, and waited.
Three minutes later, someone knocked.
When I opened it, Claire stood there.
She looked nothing like the woman I had imagined from Madison’s stories.
No business suit.
No dramatic expression.
Just jeans, a dark sweater, and a tired face that suggested she hadn’t slept properly in weeks.
She stepped inside.
“Where’s the car?”
“Down the street.”
“Good.”
She closed the door behind her.
“Did she leave?”
“Yes.”
“Exactly when she said she would?”
I nodded.
Claire exhaled.
“Then we have a chance.”
“A chance at what?”
She looked at me.
“At finding out how far they’ve gone.”
I crossed my arms.
“You knew Madison was going to Ryan’s tonight.”
“I knew.”
“You knew about the outfit.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was taking an overnight bag.”
“Yes.”
I stared at her.
“How?”
Claire hesitated.
Then she reached into her purse and pulled out a second phone.
She placed it on the kitchen counter.
“Because Ryan sent me a picture.”
My stomach tightened.
“What picture?”
Claire unlocked the phone.
The screen showed Madison.
Not tonight.
Two nights earlier.
She was sitting in Ryan’s living room.
They weren’t touching.
But they were close enough that there was no innocent explanation.
I looked away.
“I already knew they were involved.”
Claire’s eyes stayed on me.
“No.”
I looked back.
“You didn’t.”
“What do you mean?”
“You knew they were seeing each other.”
She paused.
“But you didn’t know why.”
I frowned.
“Why would that matter?”
“Because Ryan isn’t sick.”
I laughed bitterly.
“I figured that part out.”
Claire shook her head.
“You’re still not understanding.”
She opened another photo.
This one showed Ryan sitting at his desk.
On the desk was a folder.
Written across the front were three words:
THE HENDERSON ACCOUNT.
My last name.
I stared at it.
“What is that?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“You said you had a plan.”
“I do.”
She leaned closer.
“But before tonight, I need to know whether your wife is helping Ryan voluntarily.”
I looked at her.
“What else would she be doing?”
“Being used.”
The words stopped me.
Claire continued.
“Three weeks ago, I discovered Ryan had opened a private bank account.”
“An affair account?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“A business account.”
She showed me another image.
There were several transfers.
Large amounts.
All going to the same account.
My name appeared beside one of them.
I felt cold.
“That can’t be me.”
“I know.”
“Then why is my name there?”
“That’s what I’m trying to find out.”
I stared at the screen.
“How much?”
Claire hesitated.
“Almost eighty thousand dollars.”
My stomach dropped.
“You’re saying Ryan is moving money under my identity?”
“I’m saying someone is.”
She put the phone away.
“And that’s why I didn’t confront him.”
“Because you wanted proof.”
“Because I wanted to know who else was involved.”
I thought about Madison.
“She’s involved.”
Claire didn’t answer.
“Isn’t she?”
“I don’t know.”
“You literally watched her drive to his house dressed like that.”
“I know what it looks like.”
“It looks like an affair.”
Claire’s expression tightened.
“It probably is.”
That honesty caught me off guard.
Then she added:
“But an affair may be the smallest part of this.”
My phone buzzed.
We both looked at it.
Unknown number.
One message.
She made it.
I stared at the screen.
Claire’s face changed.
“Don’t reply.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
Another message arrived.
Now watch the house.
I looked at Claire.
“What house?”
She didn’t answer.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, a photograph appeared.
It showed Ryan’s house.
Taken from across the street.
Madison was getting out of her SUV.
The timestamp was less than a minute old.
Someone was watching her.
Claire immediately grabbed her purse.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever sent that photo knows you’re involved.”
I looked toward the window.
The quiet neighborhood suddenly felt completely different.
“Where are we going?”
“To Ryan’s.”
I stared at her.
“You told me not to follow Madison.”
“I said you shouldn’t follow her.”
She picked up her keys.
“I never said I wouldn’t.”
Twenty minutes later, we were parked two blocks from Ryan’s house.
Claire turned off the headlights.
Neither of us spoke.
Ryan’s house was brightly lit.
Madison’s SUV sat in the driveway.
A shadow moved behind the downstairs curtains.
Then the front door opened.
Ryan stepped outside.
He looked perfectly healthy.
No sign of illness.
No sign of weakness.
He stood on the porch and looked directly toward the street.
Claire froze.
“He knows.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
Ryan reached into his pocket.
Then his phone lit up.
Claire’s phone buzzed at exactly the same moment.
She looked down.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She handed me the screen.
A message from Ryan.
Claire, stop watching my house.
My heart started pounding.
Then another message appeared.
I know you’re with Daniel.
Claire looked at me.
“How did he know?”
Before I could answer, a car pulled into Ryan’s driveway.
It wasn’t Madison’s.
It was a black sedan.
A man stepped out.
He carried a leather briefcase.
Ryan walked toward him.
They shook hands.
Then the man turned slightly.
I couldn’t see his face clearly.
But Claire could.
Her entire body went rigid.
“No.”
“What?”
She whispered:
“That man is supposed to be dead.”
I looked at her.
“Who is he?”
Claire didn’t answer.
The man opened the briefcase.
Ryan looked inside.
Then he glanced toward Madison, who was visible through the front window.
And suddenly I understood something.
Madison hadn’t gone there to take care of Ryan.
She had been invited.
And whatever was inside that briefcase was the real reason.
My phone buzzed one final time.
This message wasn’t from Ryan.
It was from Madison.
Daniel, I’m sorry.
A second message followed.
But if you want to know what your wife has been hiding from you, come inside.
I stared at the screen.
Claire read the message over my shoulder.
Then she whispered:
“Don’t.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
She pointed toward Ryan’s house.
The front door was slowly opening.
And standing behind it was Madison.
She wasn’t alone.
Someone was standing directly behind her.
Someone neither of us had expected to see.
My wife had just opened the door for her lover—and for the man Claire had spent years believing was dead.
